Leupold Mark 4 Scopes

Leupold and cheap do not go together. But you do get what you pay for with Leupold. I just can't make myself spend that kind of money.

I have a Mark 4 4.5x14PR, 30mm tube on my 700 280 AI.
I am very happy with this scope, works well in low light.
ALthough they are expensive, there are places where you can get some good prices.

First of all, BEWARE OF EBAY !!! ... there has been a rash of fake scopes on there... I personally would not buy one on there right now.

I did a lot of research and asked a lot of ???'s on this site and 2 sniper sites.

I just ordered a 3.5-15x56 Nightforce NXS with titanium rings and one piece base... I talked to a lot of Leupold guys and NF guys.... a lot of leupold guys sold theirs and bought NF.... So I figured I wouldn't waste time. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I got 58 PM's from guys helping me out and 9 phone calls...

So, to save you time.... buy the Nightforce /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

Although the cost of Leupold scopes has gone up the quality has done the opposite. The top of line benchrest scopes need at least 3 trips through repair to even get half way good.

The only reason anybody shoots Leupold in competition is because the are light weight. It makes it easier to meet the weight limits. The Nightforce are much more acurate scopes but weigh about twice as much.

the info posted is correct, nightforce is the absolute best when it comes to what we need in a LR scope, the ? is, is the difference worth 475.00 to you?
RR

sold 3 MK IV's and replaced with Nightforce,..never been happier. The only TRUE MK IV scopes are the straight 10X and 16X models with the thicker main tubes,..the others are glorified LR scopes with M1 turrets installed.

and Jack is not kidding,..the competition scopes have been horrible from what I hear,..Bill Truitt was telling me the other day that finally on it's 3rd trip in for repair, leupold finaly just sent his customer a brand new one instead of fixing it AGAIN. The weaver T-series beats leupy scopes,..and the Nightforce walks away from them both.

save the extra$$$ and buy the nightforce.

Mark IV scopes are of decent quality but are horribly overpriced for what you get. For the same or just a little bit more money, you can step up significantly in quality with the following lines:
--IOR Tactical 35mm tube;
--Nightforce NXS;

For a little less $$ than the Mark IV, I believe the following scopes offer the same or better optics, accurate tracking, and outstanding warranty:
--Nikon Tactical
--SWFA Super Sniper (not quite as good optically but built like a tank);
--Burris Xtreme Tactical

Good luck to you!

Absolute best?

Well, we would maybe think about US Optics, or Schmidt & Bender, everyone seems to forget about them. Then maybe Nightforce a very close second to the above two.

Third place? I don't know, but I do have four Luppy's with a couple of those being the LR Tactical series, which have tracked excellant, with no trouble, even while shooting matches at differant yardages/meters.

For the money? If you keep you eyes open, you will find one of the Luppy Tactical Long Range Scopes for around $500 bucks, and NOBODY can complain about a deal like that.

NightForce scopes are warranted for 2 years, Luppy's, Lifetime. But saying that, I won't take anything away from a NightForce Scope. They are simply an Excellant product, and seem to be the #1 1000 yard Benchrest scope used.

But....this IS a Predator website, not a Benchrest website, and I think a Luppy M3 3.5-10X40 Milldot(picked up for $500 no doubt) is the ultimate predator scope. Very fast handling, very quick target aquisiton to any obtainable range.
But hey, I ain't nobody-anybody should be listening too.
Good shooting! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Hey Littletoe i will agree with you . I would prefer the Leupold over the NF for hunting just because of the weight. If i could pick from any of the above mentioned scope i would pick US Optic over them all. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif

I've seen this mentioned elsewhere on the 'net... it's wrong.

The Nightforce scopes have a lifetime warranty. Here's a link to the owner's manual of PDF. Scroll to the bottom of the screen...

As far as glass and construction, there isn't enough difference between USO, Nightforce, and S&B to tell with the human eye. Depending on how your eye perceives color, you may have a preference for one model or another. Resolution-wise, they're all great. I think that Nightforce is probably the best choice, based on state-side support, and a company that is very strong in the market.

Hey, if it works for you, GREAT! Can't argue with that one bit.

However, since you're looking for a scope to excel in a predator hunting application (not benchrest) then why spend the $$ on the markup of a Mark IV? You can get the EXACT SAME glass, a predator-specific reticle, and a larger selection of variable magnification(s) in a VX-III?

I personally would rather have the VX-3 for my predator rifles than the Mark 4 /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I haven't heard anyone comment on Ziess Scopes. I have the cheaper Conquest model, but like it everybit as much as my Leupolds. There are some sales on the 3x9x40 for $399 I think.

I have two 3x9 Conquest by Zeiss and believe they are better than the Leupold VX-3 and VX-2. I am get ready to buy another one.

My assumption was that when you buy a mark 4 you buy it because
1) the repeatable turrets
2) the 30mm tube gives you much more elevation/windage adjustment
3) lifetime warranty
4) optical quality
Its been proven that NF beats them hands down for just a few dollars more (compared to other scopes mentioned)
These traits we buy the loopy mk4 are those needed by Long Range shooters, the range and dial crowd, and I'll stick by my statement NF is the absolute best for the long range game, this is what the LR shooters with years of experience are saying. I don't own a NF but I will when funds allow.
I do own a mk4 and it is a good scope, no doubt about it.
If all you wanna do is shoot to 300-500 yds they are probably not worth it, but when you need repeatable turrets, yes they are worth it. The zeiss conquests are good also but the 1" tube limits the elevation travel.
Bottom line is for LR work you need at least a mk4, IOR, or NF
RR

I have them all and would suggest getting the 30mm LongRange model instead of the Mark 4. Less money and just as good for what you will use it for.

Just get the ill. Retical and you will be happy.

I have a VX-III 4.5-14x40 LR (on a Savage 17HMR) and a Mk IV 6.5-20x50 (on a Les Baer SuperVarmint) and a 5.5-22x56 Nightforce NSX (on a Barrett 50bmg). I would choose a Mk IV for a preditor rifle, I don't know what model #'s they are, but if you get one get the lower turrets. The ill. retical is very nice to have in low light. On a hunting rifle the VX-III LR is a very bright scope though and I am looking for another one for my deer rifle. I do think that the Nightforce is the best scope of the group, but it does have some drawbacks to it.
