leupold rifleman opinions

Guys,

Need some input/wisdom on the leupold rifleman series. I found a rifleman, 4-12x40 scope for 215 bucks and was wondering if that is a good buy? Is the glass similar to the vx-1 or vx-2? How is the glass compared to the vortex viper i just bought?

I would opt for a Redfield series 4-12x40 over a Rifleman.

Might even find one for a lil less than the $215 they want for the Rifleman.

Th Vortex is better glass IMO and the Redfield is the same scope as the rifleman the ones ive lookd threw didnt have a very good field of view when compared to the Nikons they had on the shelf.

Yes, redfield weaver or several others would be my vote over the rifleman. My memory is obviously foggy and I stand corrected as ALL leupolds are made in the USA

I did get to look through one of the *new* Nikons just the other day. I alternated looking through it, a Redfield, and several others. All in 4-12x40. Granted I was in a big store so take that into consideration, but to ME, that new Nikon was much clearer, brighter and more forgiving on eye relief than any of the others. It impressed me.

It can be had for about $190 at several places.

Leupold does say one second they are made in the usa and in the next admit to using some outsourced parts. It would make sense that the majority of the outsourced parts go into the lower end scopes. Leupold only needs to use 50% of there own parts in order to claim made in the usa as per this.

From the Federal Trade Commission FTC.gov
"Buy American Act — Requires that a product be manufactured in the U.S. of more than 50 percent U.S. parts to be considered Made in USA for government procurement purposes. For more information, review the Buy American Act at 41 U.S.C. §§ 10a-10c, the Federal Acquisition Regulations at 48 C.F.R. Part 25, and the Trade Agreements Act at 19 U.S.C. §§ 2501-2582."

I dont really know of to many optic makers who actually are made in the USA anymore.

x2 While I really love Leupold Scopes for my hunting rifles it has been my experience that anything under their VX-II line is not worth the money.

keep in mind that Leupold offers two variations of the Rifleman scopes - the gold ringed lifetime warranted models are built much better than the econo models

I could not see how someone could opt for a Rifleman given the small price difference between it and a VX-1.

I do not buy anything less than a VX2 from Leupold. Anything cheaper, I go with Weaver Classics.......

I think "assembled" would be more accurate on many products.
As far as I know, all leupold scopes are gold ring warranties. Even if the scope is only so-so, the warranty is good.

The friction adjustments suck. For $219 + tax I would shop for a used vx3, bushnell 3200,or a Nikon. Used scopes can,be found for a bargain and remember to lowball an offer.
