Leupold Varmint Reticle

What do you guy's think about the Varmint Hunter Reticle available in the newer Leupold scopes? Are they an aid to shooting or just another gimmick?

I have 3 scopes with that reticle and it defintely works but to be honest I have not had much chance to use it in the field. For coyote hunting its not something you use very often now if you are shooting PD's woodchucks and such it would be very useful.By the way its got fine crosshairs and they are not the best for night time hunting although they work but are hard to see but they are great for target shooting.

100% love the Varmint H.R. I've been using it on my AR-15 for two years great scope. I shoot 52 HPBT 3250 FPS, B/Master SS 24" 1 in 9 twist.
-main duplex @ 100 yards.........+1" high
...200 yards.........+2.5" high
1____300 yards........+1.5" high
2______400 yards......0"........
3________500yards.....-5.5"..Low
__________Duplex post? don't know yet

I have one, and have yet been able to shoot out past 200yds. The directions in the box say that for a 22-250 or similar caliber (shooting around 3750 fps) that the main duplex should be sighted in at 200yds, and then it is 300, 400, 500 etc... Not sure if the windage marks are right or accurate. I have the 4.5X14 and the scope itself is great. But like I said, haven't been able to confirm the reticles and wether they are accurate out to 500yds.

I just picked up a minty Remington ADL in 222 Rem (Triple Duece)made in 1977. I'm trying to decide what power scope to put on the this rifle w/o being overpowering. Can't decide on a VXII in 4 x 12 or jumping up to VXIII in 4.5 X 14 AO w/ the varmint reticle? The 222 cartridge is basically a 200/250 yard round so I don't think I need to jump up to a 6.5 x 20 but.......?

I was messing around with mine on the 6x45 two weeks ago.

With the 1st stadia below the crosshair "zeroed" @ 300yds, the 2nd + 3rd stadia lines were close enough to consistently hit an 8x10" plate at 4 and 500yds close to center. 70gr Blitzkings @ ~3000fps and 14x max mag power...

The windage holds were excellent for the 10+mph wind too. When I timed the shots right, of course!

Dave,

I need to clarify my above post first to avoid confusion I may have caused.

I zeroed at 300yds with the FIRST stadia hash BELOW the main X-hair. (2nd if counting the main Xhair as one)
This is what I meant & I'll edit my post to reflect...

That said, dead on target hold with the main xhair is just about 1.75" high @ 100yds and about 1" high @ 200yds.

Based on that, I'd SWAG the main X hair ZERO at about 225yds...

Sounds to me like the varmint reticle is a useful tool which would be much more appropriate for my 22-250 instead of the 222 Rem.

Fred I understood.I should have said crosshair instead of stadia. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif That makes sense that you would be a little high at 200 because the way mine are sighted the crosshair is deadon at 200yds but I have to lower the power to 10X(on slower calibers) exactly to put my 300,400,500 on the money. If I put it at 14X I am low at the longer distances with a similar bullet traveling at similar speeds.
TucoTom you can make the reticle fit your loads by following the directions Leupold provides so you can use it for the.222 or the 22-250 by merely changing the power of the scope to fit the trajectory. It will make sense if you read up on it.

Glad we're on the same page then!

Ain't she purdy???
