Leupold VX-R..........Patrol?

Ok...I have searched and tried to read every topic on here regarding the Leupold VX-R, lol.
I am currently using a Vortex HS 4-16x44. For where I hunt, and most of the shots I take, I rarely even go above a 5-6 power. I have determined that I would rather have a 3-9 than a 4-12 or 4-16. (also because it'd be a bit lighter).

I jumped on the Vortex bandwagon, and can't say anything negative about them, but I am really missing my Leupold design/clarity.

So...This is my question: Leupold (as ya'll know

) has the VX-R with 4 different options on the reticle. (I have read the posts regarding the reticles). But have any of you used/use/ or hunted with the Firedot TMR reticle that comes on the Patrol VX-R?

I am curious if it is WAY too busy for coyote hunting, and should primarily be used for tactical use. (The reason I ask, is that I found a used one for a good price :))

Thanks ahead of time guys!

I have the VXR patrol 1-4, Witch I believe is that retical. I think it is great for hunting, The circle centers you up fast and the red dot puts it on the mark. I use the hash marks to go from sub to super sonic rounds sometimes. My daughter uses it very easily and she is 8 years old. I like it alot.

No...the 1-4 has an option to get a different reticle. I like the one you're talking about, but it isn't even offered in the 3-9 model patrol.

Just looked it up, Kinda like a mill dot. Alot more marks though. I think it would be ok. I often think reticals like that are a little thin in the middle where you are aiming. defiantly got a bit going on. but with the light on you could get a pin point shot.

Way too busy. Also I bet those mil hashes are WAY thicker than you'd like. I wouldn't purchase it until you see the reticle in person. Stick with the plain dot.

I've got the Leupold VX-R Patrol 3-9x40 w/ TMR & firedot reticle. It's a darn good scope but if you're consistently shooting 200+ yds. out, the reticle is thicker that what you're gonna want. With shots inside 175, it's awesome as the thicker crosshairs allow for super quick target acquisition. Most of my shots are w/in 75 yds. so that's not an issue for me. The glass is decent, I'd say on par w/ the VX2s but not nearly as nice as my VX3s. Let me know if you have any other ?s as I'm predator hunting w/ mine twice/week now

Very Helpful! I am about the same...I rarely shoot past 150 unless I have to, but most of mine are much closer. You can find the patrols used for a decent price on forums, but I guess since the newer (non-patrol) models are still fresh, I havent seen many if any of them for sale.

Have you ever used Vortex Viper's? I have a Vortex Viper HS 4-16x44, and it is just way too much scope for coyote hunting. I rarely have it past the 6 power. I was curious if you knew what Leupold VX glass the viper would be comparable to.

No problem DT! I haven't used a Viper so can't compare. For out to 150 yds, you can't go wrong w/ the VXR Patrol w/ TMR, you'll love it. 3-9x40 is perfect also. For what I use it for, it's absolutely stellar, would purchase it again in a heartbeat. On a bolt rifle that I'm consistently shooting longer range though, I'd want thinner reticle crosshairs.
