Leupold VX-R Scopes

They've got my attention but I haven't heard much... all I've seen is one consumer review over on Optics Talk and a review by Outdoor Life... looked good

Finally gave in and bought a VX-R in the 3-9x40 configuration. So far I really like what I see... extremely clear and bright, crosshairs seem to be between a standard and heavy duplex, and the illuminated dot is nice and small and can be adjusted down very low. I'm taking it to the range today to dial it in.

I almost picked one of these up. I was gonna get the 4-12x40 CDS FDD. I'm still having thoughts of selling one of my NF NXS and picking one up........

This is the first I have heard of this scope and it all looks very interesting to me.
I have been saving for a little while now for a Leupold with the illuminated german#4 but this series of scope is much more affordable. This scope is 1/3rd of the price!
Please give us an update on how well it performs and your likes/disslikes...are you going to use this scope at night?

JMO, if you buy a Leupy with an illuminated reticle, I would not buy a German #4. Leupy's #4's are WAY thick, and cover a lot of the target. They are okay for night hunting, but if you have illumination, there is no need for a #4 reticle also. Pick one or the other, not both. JMO.......

Night hunting is my intended purpose.
My buddy has one that is not illuminated and I realy like the looks of the reticle, for the thickness aspect it actualy seemed to focus my eyes on the center of the target rather quickly in the thinner center section but I know that shooting paper and shooting fur is two different situations.
I am just getting started with night hunting and much of this is new to me personaly, thats one of the great things about this website, lots of people that have 'been there and done that' and I am always looking to expand my knowledge base.
Not meaning to hijack anyone's thread but what IS a good choice for night hunting?
I assumed that a lighted reticle would be the way to go, one tiny little red dot.

I'm saying that if you use an illuminated reticle, there is no need for the thick German #4. It is just going to cover up more of your target and not aid one bit with reticle visibility. A simple duplex or dot will work better IMO.

Now if you did not have an IR, then a thicker reticle would be warranted for night hunting.........

Ken,

What NF you thinking about selling. Wouldn't be that 8-32 NF would it?

Thank you, you got me thinking now.
I just started a thread in the night hunting section on this subject....

I just got extremely confused for a quick second...I am a Ken as well lol!

Sorry, Ken.

I have used several German #4s, and prefer Leupolds the least. If you go IR, dot or standard duplex.......

Nope, that one stays. I have a 3-15x50 NP-R1 also.....

Happy someone got one of these, they caught my eye too. I have three VX3 4.5x.14x50's with IR's. They are great scopes but a little pricy. The R's look to be a good value.
Looking forward to the report.
I still have a NF on my mind!

Quote:How come I cant find these on Leupold's site, am I that blind?

If you are, then I am too. I couldn't find anyting on their site. I did google them though and all sort of places selling them comes up. I thought that was very odd, they already have them in retailers for sale and nothing on their site. Strange...

I've been asking about these scopes for quite some time, too. Posted several times about them and it never went anywhere. Would love to get a report! Good or bad. I like that the low power version remains lightweight. Alot of the IRs are heavier scopes I'm assuming because of batteries.

I was able to get to the range with the VX-R yesterday. As I mentioned before the glass was clear and crisp with a sharp, bright image all the way up to 9x. I've been looking for a scope in the 3-9x range for low-light/ moonlight hunting and I think I finally found it. I called Leupold today about scope caps and the tech told me that the rubber ring on the eyepiece can be unscrewed and replaced with the flip up caps. It has the standard sized eyepiece. (the Butler Creeks are a temporary fix)

The scope tracked well and was quick to dial in. I took some pics through the scope at 100yds on 3x and 9x just to give you an idea of what the reticle looks like. The target in the pic is the Predator Master's target... the big center circle is 3" and the 4 circles in the corners are 1". I'm not even going to guess at the subtensions but I had no trouble shooting nice groups out to 200 yds.

I had the chance to hunt with the VX-R tonight and it performed very well. The dot was easy to pick up on the lowest setting and seemed to have the right amount of illumination without washing out the sight picture. In my opinion, Leupold got it right with this scope. They have created a piece of quality glass with usable illumination at a decent price point.
