Leupold VX-R Scopes

Thanks for the review, looks good to me. If I have need for another scope I will most likely get one of these as well. The reticle is very fine which I like as long as there is illumination to go with it. Since they don't have it up on their site yet would you mind showing how the dot looks lit up. My VX3's light the whole crosshair.

Looks excellent. I like the power ring on it. How hard was it to turn throughout the scope power? I've had issues in the past with VX2 having a hard time turning during the winter months.

The power ring was pretty easy to turn. When I was out tonight it was 12 degrees and I could zoom up to 9x wearing a mitt on my left hand with no problem. I'll try to post a pic of the illumination. It only lights up a very small dot in the center of the crosshair which I really like. I would say it's real similar to a Trijicon Accupoint crosshair reticle.

Hey Str8Shooter, I just thought I'd check back in with you to see how you're liking this scope? Thought that maybe you've had a little more time in the field with it to give a more in depth review. Would love to hear!

Well, I did have the chance to hunt with it, even killed a coyote. The scope has a nice, bright image... even in very low light conditions. I was very happy with the performance of the scope but ran into an issue. After using the scope for a few nights the motion activation stopped working. I would turn on the red dot and after calling for 5 minutes or so the illumination would turn off, which is what it's supposed to do. The problem is, no matter how hard I tried I couldn't get the illumination to re-activate unless I used the on/off button. When I got back home and the scope warmed up, the illumination would work flawlessly. So, unfortunately I have to look into returning the scope or getting it repaired/ replaced. I would be happy with having the illumination stay on the whole time that I'm calling but I don't think that's an option.

** yes, I do have the FDD - Fire Dot Duplex... nice bold reticle, even without the illumination

Man, that's a shame! I was really liking the idea of one of these scopes in the lower power of 2-7x33 for a light calling rig during day and night. Do you think this problem would exist on all of them in cold weather?

I have 7 Leupolds in different setups on my rifles, from VX-I 2-7x33 to VX-III 4.5-14x50. As soon as I saw the VX-R demo at my local toy shop I knew this was the scope I have been waiting for. The 2-7x33 Ballistic Fire Dot looks perfect for my RRA 16" hunting rig. What surprised me was the clarity of the optics. I can’t find one quick enough, but given that I am across the other side of the world it is not surprising.
