Leupold VX-R - share your thoughts

Originally Posted By: simojoJust an update on the VX3i that I tried. It's on its way back as I type. I didn't see any appreciable difference between it and my VXR 2-7 in glass quality and felt that the 2-7 had better resolution at night when comparing both on the same magnification level.

Another update: the VXR 1.25-4 with firedot duplex arrived today and I definitely like it better than the firedot circle 1-4 I had before. It seems less cluttered and easier to pick up targets when shooting with both eyes open despite it being 1.25x on the low end.

I sold the firedot circle because I wanted something closer to 1x, which I found in the Burris Tac30, but it is also cluttered and doesn't have as good as resolution at night compared to the VXR (understanding that it's not the quality).

For a day scope, an in-a-pinch HD scope, or a low $$ "try the low power variable route" the Tac30 does well.

Bottom line: I still love my VXRs!!

Thanks for sharing the info on the FireDot Circle because I've been looking at the Ballistic FireDot, which is quite similar. It seems like there are some who feel it helps draw your eye to the target while others feel it is too busy and just go with the FireDot duplex. I have a Leupold VX-2 3-9x40 on my big game rifle that has the standard Leupold Duplex, so that is what I'm most familiar with.

I have had a 3x9 VXR Fire dot LRV reticle since October. I've used a couple of Vx3 4.5x14 scopes and for calling in the moonlight the VXR at 3 power is a much better scope. For a pure coyote calling scope I think I have the perfect one. I would rather have a bright field of view at low power than worry about how high I can turn the power up. For the money they can't be beat.

So the LRV reticle has 3 separate dots that are illuminated when you press the button? And the hold points below center are setup for a 200 yard zero, correct? I haven't had an opportunity to look through one with an LRV reticle since no one local sells these.

Correct. Sorta.

It has 200 yd zero and hash marks for 300, 400(and a crosshair point for 500). INSIDE the hash marks the little red dots will light up with a button push. It is a cool set up in my opinion.

So yes, 3 little red dots....lol

Looking at Leupold's reticle information PDF and what it actually looks like are rarely one in the same, so this is very helpful. Thank you!

My only concern with the VX-R at this point is the fact that the electronic portion of the scope is not guaranteed for life, only 2 years. It gives you warm and fuzzies knowing a company stands behind their product 100%. I've always liked Leupold for that reason. But I guess they don't want to extend their normal golden ring full lifetime warranty for one reason or another. Yes, I know electronics fail, but 2 years is not very long. 5 would be more reasonable IMO.

I bet after the warranty ends, any necessary repairs will be reasonably priced and Leupold will treat you right. Because... Leupold!

Sorry, I don't look around the optics section much. But yes, my 1-4x with exposed turrets is the patrol model. Heck, I would even sell it to you now that my coyote hunting is done, I want to try a 2-7x next season.

I talk a lot of trash about the exposed turrets but they aren't horrible. I hunt with it all night long with big gloves on and I always carry my gun in front and lean my gloved hands on my scope now and then. When I carry my gun behind my back it's never a problem. I also asked Leupold how I could tighten up my turrets so they weren't getting bumped and the official response was to loosen the turret cap screws so there was NO WAY of adjusting the scope, I would give that a try but I have never seen a freaking 1mm allen wrench so I can't loosen the caps.

Otherwise, it's an awesome night scope. My VX-R at night is as bright and clear as my Nightforce 8-32x lowered to 8x.

Thanks for the additional info on the turrets. I'm not sure if it would make any difference, but I've heard you can order S1 dials from Leupold for about $50/piece. Costly in my opinion, but I believe they are supposed to be the larger, tactical style turrets vs. the lower-profile ones that come with it.

The more I've read and researched the Patrol model, the less likely I am to buy one. I will likely never use/need the TMR reticle and the adjustments are in MRAD; I'm used to MOA. The only thing that is a plus for the Patrol model is the actual magnification is 3-9x, where as the actual magnification on the VX-R's is 2.5-6.6x and 3.3-8.6x. The FOV is noted as the same though and that slight difference isn't a deal breaker for me.

I might have a spare Allen wrench I can send you if you want one, I'll have to look. Let me know if you want one and I'll look. I'm so rich I'll even cover the postage.

Hey thanks a lot. I cant really turn that down, I haven't tried too hard but I've never had a way to adjust the turret caps, I just make zero with a sharpy. Not a huge deal but if you've got one around I wouldn't mind it. I would even find something to put up in the pay it forward section to keep the generosity going.
