I have a Rem 700 Mountain rifle with detachable mag chambered in 7mm-08 topped with a VX3 2.5-8x36 and love it.

I purchased my 11 year old son his first rifle. It is a Browning X Bolt chambered in 7mm-08 as well. I need to get him a scope for this rifle. Which of the 2 scopes would you put on it? Price difference not a factor please.

Keep in mind we predominately whitetail hunt in central Wisconsin in case that changes your opinion.

Thank you

The cds are good for longer range hunting and target shooting. When I hunted in south central Wisconsin I never needed anything long range. So unless he's used to turrets why complicate it. Less things to mess with. Keep it simple for the kid. Just my opinion though. I'm sure he'll want another rifle, and you can trick that one out with a turret system as he gets into longer range shooting. I'd go with the 2.5-8 x36 vx3. You love yours, so get him the same as dad, he'd probably think that's cool anyway. Awesome choice in caliber to by the way for any WI hunting.

I bet this has been kicked around a million times with subtle preferences making the call,
I like the 2.5-8 but have switched many to 3.5-10 for a couple reasons, it seems brighter and I feel that being longer makes it easier to mount and get the eye relief best for me.
Guess I like abundant magnification too but mostly use it for sight in.

I dont think that I would give my kid a cap to twist on. There is no way that a kid is going to leave it alone after you tell them not to turn it unless you tell them to. I would playbit safe for now and maybe upgrade later if you feel the need.

My kids have hunted and competed with turrets from an early age.
I would suggest it depends how children are taught whether or not they are going to play with turrets.

My 3.5-10X CDS is a great scope for open country hunting. Going into tight cover with my 3.5-10X CDS caused heart burn because of the FOV. I have always felt more comfortable using my 2.5-8X's in closer cover. Plus, you can shoot a deer a long ways away on 8X. Ten power isn't critical. Just my $.02 worth or less.

Train them up in the way that they should go. I am not a fan of of the target knobs for anything other than fixed position shooting and only want one if it has a zero stop on it. Sort of old school in my thinking about my guns. I only have one plastic stock. We all go with our favorites and I can do most of my shooting with the good old duplex reticle.
