I would like to hear your opinions on the quality differences of the Leupold VX series.

What is your experience with the VX-I vs. VX-II vs. VX-III quality of the optics?

The main difference I have is the friction type adjustments verses the positive click type. I only have experience with the II & III's.

The VXI has friction adjustments and is in effect the same quality as the older Vari-XII.

The VXII is click adjustable and is in effect the same quality as the older Vari-XIII.

The VXIII is a great scope.

I have a Rifleman
2 VXI's
2 VAri-XII's
2 VXII's

They are all good scopes with the nod in quality definitely going to the VXII's.

I have friends with VXIII's but sadly I do not.

I wouldn't bother with the VX-I, there are slightly less expensive scopes for that qaulity of glass. However the VX-II and III's are qaulity pieces of glass. The clarity of the two compare well with each other however in my experience the light gathering ability in my opinion is better on the III's with equal objective diameters.

I went to sportsmans and looked at them (great thing to try them out/compare before you buy) and there was a huge difference between them. The vx-II was a whole lot brighter and clearer. The click adjustments are a quite a bit nicer too.

The click adjustments are a quite a bit nicer too. I didn't look at the vx-III, but I'm sure they're even better. I took a liking to the Nikon Monarch 2.5-10x42 w/milldot reticle myself. The Vx-II was also very light!

The variable power adjustment ring is easier to turn on the VX-III. It has a knob or tit that sticks out and give you quite a bit more leverage when turning the ring. It also helps in cold weather when your grip is not as good, or when wearing gloves. Also, in addition to the extra lense coatings on the VX-III, the scope usually has about .5 to 2 more levels of power, depending on the scope. In other words, the VX-II is a 3x9, and similar model in VX-III is a 3.5 x 10 power.

VXII is a great scope. VXIII is better. I have several and love them. If you really want to blow the budget look at the new VX7. Its awesome. I sold off the family jewells and bought one. Wow! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

In the past year I've bought a VXIII 6.5-20, a VXI 4-12X40 and a VXII 4-12X50. And I have an older VXII 3-9X40. I've owned a total of 3 of the 3-9's. I love them all. Besides the click adjustment on the II and III the coatings get better as you go up the ladder. There may also be diferrences in the quality of glass but all of my Leupolds are high quality. All of them come with the Leupold customer service which I've had the opportunity to experience and I can say it's outstanding.

The Rifleman scopes are the same thing as the old vari-x1s, the vx1 are the same as the old vari-xIIs . The cool thing about the vx-7 is that you can mount that sucker low and have a larger objective. Food for thought.

I own 5 VXIII 3.5x10x40, 1 6.5x20x40 1 2.5x8x40.A true Leopold optics person.Recently I purchased a new calling rifle(Tikka T3 22/250) and I needed a new optics for it off to sportsman warehouse I go.Well they had a sale 1 day only it was day after thaksgiving. The salesman convinced me to purchase a ziest conquest 3x9x40 380.00.At 200yards I can see my bullet hole in the target.I cant do that with my vxIII 4.5x10 and I payed more for my leopolds than I did my ziest. My leopold are going to stay mounted were they are I just Wanted to share my expierience.Good luck with what ever you purchase!!

I own:
2 Unertl 2" target models both 24X
5 Vari-X III 6.5-20'
2 vx-II's in 6-18
1 old, old, Vari-X II 3x9 (my first Leupold)
1 Leupold 3-9 compact, Older scope
1 Leupold M8 straight 6 Power
1 Leupold 4x rimfire
1 leupold 2X eer pistol scope
1 Nikon Buckmaster 4.5-14
The Unertl's are the best glass bar none, I have ever looked through. As you can tell, I'm a big Leupold fan. Out of 13 Leupold's, 1 had to go back to the factory for a repair. The Nikon, for what I paid, I feel was decent glass. I used to own a silver vari-XII 3x9 power, I swore was the clearest of all of them. That and the fact, they are made here in the usa, at least means a lot to me. Buy Leupold, and don't look back. Just my 2 cts.
