What caught my attention:

• Assurance that your Leupold Golden Ring product will be backed by the ultimate guarantee of quality and service. Leupold Golden Ring products are backed by The Leupold Full Lifetime Guarantee when purchased from a Leupold Authorized Golden Ring Dealer. Purchasing from an unauthorized dealer will void any product warranty

I wrote them an email asking just what this means for used Leupold scopes. If older scopes will now not be warrantied unless they're documented to come from an authorized dealer, they just shot themselves in the ass big-time /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Burris has been a MUCH better value than Leupold for a long time now. Vari X II's flat out stink. I can't believe people pay a long dollar for a crummy washer adjustment system that is impossible to change on a repeatable basis. Vari X III's are excellent, but cost more than an equally good Burris. Leupold does dominate the target and benchrest market, but you better be ready to pay the frieght. I doubt they will get away with the warranty change to protect stocking dealers. Thanks for bringing it up......

Leupold scopes have been overrated for some time!! Buy an Elite 3200, Sightron SII, or better yet a Nikon! Leupold is feeling the bite of these other companies! That is why they are revamping their line for this year. There are far better products for less money with equal or better warranty service to boot!

The link no longer brings up this announcement of a new warranty policy. FYI, if you didn't see it, it was dated 02/12/2004, last friday, and stated that the new warranty replaced any and all past warranties.

Now it's gone.

I'm thinking that just maybe it's already turned into a PR nightmare and they're feeling their collective asses chewed on pretty badly already.

Guess we'll see how this develops...

Stu,

Could you post a more direct link to that information. This is the info I found on there site:

The Leupold Full Lifetime Guarantee
Built To Last Generations — Leupold and Stevens, Inc. is a family owned, fourth generation company that has been manufacturing precision optical products in the U.S. for nearly 100 years. Leupold’s success has been built on our commitment to your absolute satisfaction and our commitment to the shooting sports. It’s for these reasons that we offer the Leupold Full Lifetime Guarantee.

If any Leupold Golden Ring product is found to have defects in materials or workmanship, we will, at our option, repair or replace it. FREE. Even if you are not the original owner. No warranty card is needed. No time limit applies.

There is only one way to void the Leupold Full Lifetime Guarantee: unfortunately, we cannot honor the guarantee of scopes that have been disassembled, modified, or worked on by anyone not authorized by Leupold. To ensure this doesn’t happen to you, contact Leupold Technical Service before having any work or repairs done to your valuable Leupold optics. Call 502-526-1400 or write to us. See our Contact page for e-mail contact information

Please note it says "even if you are not the orignial owner."

I really don't want to get into a argument on scopes. But I've always found leupolds to be outstanding products. And I mostly buy them used to get even more value out of them. Since they cost less and perform better then others I've tried. Having said that I've seen many brands of scopes including leupolds fail, furthermore I'll agree that there are certainly other brands that do a great job.

The link in my first post WAS a direct link. It was a Leupold page explaining the changes to their warranty policy. I copied the entire 1st point they listed in that post.

That link no longer takes you to the same page. Apparently Leupold pulled the page.

My money is on the bet that Leupold dreamed this up, posted it, and have already felt enough heat over it that they're rethinking the deal.

I have Leupold scopes. No complaints. I've always been willing to recommend them to others. However, Leupold has made 2 changes lately:

1) They changed their retail/dealer relationship in some manner that has eliminated our ability as consumers to shop for the best price. Check Cabela's, Bass Pro Shop, Midway USA, Bear Basin, doesn't matter: you will pay the same price for the same scope at all of them. And that price is more than it used to be at Bear Basin & others that had competetively lower prices.

2) On friday they announced this new warranty policy. The policy states that only scopes bought from authorized dealers will be warranteed. That raises questions: How does this effect a scope one bought 20 years ago? How does anyone know if the original dealer was "authorized"? What about used scopes? So far, if we bought one, it was covered, period. Now maybe it's not. I wrote them today and asked some pointed questions about these things.

Item #1 was enough to have me seriously considering whether I'd buy another Leupold anyway. Nikon Monarch and Zeiss Conquest, to name 2, are kicking Leupold's butt in the marketpalce for a reason. Weaver Grand Slams are also great values. There are quality choices, many of which can be had for less money, all of which I can shop for the best deal.

Leupold's history of excellent customer service and no time limit warranty, not limited to the original owner, were 2 things that made them worth considering spending the bucks on. If they stick with this new policy, my next scope will be something else, no question.

Everyone has to determine for themselves what constitutes good value for the money. In my case, I don't think Leupold is worth the price if they play games with the warranty. Add to that the fact that I've spent a fair amount on their products, with the original warranty, to now have them tell me that THAT warranty is null & void, replaced with this one, as of last friday.

That strikes me as bad business. As a customer I regard it as a breech of contract, which was part of the reason I chose their products to start with. Once a company does that to me, I'm highly unlikely to ever take a chance on them again, nor recommend anyone else do, either.

Now, if someone asks me about Leupold's warranty, I'll have to tell them that was excellent, now it's just great. Until Leupold changes their minds again.

Thanks for the info Stu! However, my Leupold days ended when I bought a Sightron SII and Nikon Monarch. There are other high quality scopes out there at better prices, especailly now that Leupold won't let their dealers discount them.

Now that it's blank, I'm guessing that this WAS a policy change, it was real, it was placed into effect on 2/12/2004, and is now about to become the fastest dying policy change in the history of the company.

I still have not recieved a response to my email. I'm sure I will, but I'm betting they got buried with similar queries and it may take a while to handle them all.

Stu,
Thanks for the heads-up. Hopefully, it was a false alarm, as maybe Leupold pulled the warranty change message when someone there realized what a tremendous screw-up it would be!!!!! I own over a dozen Leupold VariX-III scopes, many of them bought used. A major selling point for me has always been Leupold's unlimited lifetime warranty, regardless of original ownership. Should that change, I suspect my Leupold loyalty could also change.

If it weren't for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all! I decided I'd get a Leupold scope this time and ordered one Feb 9 or 10. Figures.

Stuart,
There seems to be considerable misunderstanding on this warranty issue. I want to
assure you that we still extend warranty coverage to all Leupold optics that you
now own without concern as to how long you've had them or from whom you received
them. In addition, we have no intention to deny warranty service on any scope that
you may purchase secondhand. Please remain confident in Leupold customer service.
