Lighted Decoys at Night

Not being a smart asprin here but if a fox or a coyote needs a light to catch his prey at night, they wood starve to death. The only time I use a decoy at night is when there is a full moon and the ground is covered with snow.

Like getfoxy said my jack in the box has a little light on it and I have tried it, I could tell no real differance at night with it.It want hurt anything. In the post I made earlier the only reason I use a decoy on a full moon night is to keep the attention off me when calling, like daytime.

Of course, this may be why they prefer to hunt more at dusk and dawn rather than in the middle of the night :) I know that the one great thing about using an LED on a decoy is that it tends to discourage the owls. Since I've started using a light on my Quiver Critter, I've noticed the owls will swoop in, but won't hit it anymore. In the area where I hunt there are tons of barred owls, and they have a real appetite for Quiver Critters...

Uhhhm! They hunt more at dawn and dusk rather than middle of the night.I guess they hunt when they get hungry, probably all night long between dusk and dawn more so in this part of the country at night...

Heh, my point was just that coyotes see better when there's a little light than when there's not. Obviously, they do what they need to do, depending on environmental pressure; for instance, animals that are normally nocturnal will hunt in the middle of the day if the weather is extremely cold at night and warmer in the day...

I would imagine that coyotes, much like foxes, would tend to rely on other senses when hunting in a very dark environment. Subsequently, if your decoy isn't presenting other attractors, like scent or sound, then it isn't likely to draw their attention when there's little to no light out... hence the LED, since they are capable of detecting very low levels of illumination.

The nice thing about the Quiver Critter is that the fur comes off of the decoy, like a hand puppet, so if you happen to have a real rabbit handy you can take the fake fur and rub it all over the rabbit and its cage to get a nice rabbit stink on it :) that helps if you're not going to use a light on the decoy when it's dark out...

10-4 Captain A ,I have one of those decoys also and it doesnt take alot to pull that rabbit off of that little piece of wire!!!Take care,Chad

It's actually pretty funny - my neighbor's kid has a big rabbit that they keep in a hutch outside, so I'm always stopping by their house on the way to hunt to freshen up the decoy :)

I had to start doing that because my wife hates me keeping scents of any kind around the house.
