Lightforce & Strobe switch? Need answers.

My wife has given me the go-ahead on purchasing the Lightforce Night Hunter 170 Pack. I am planning on getting the dimmer switch but I am also wondering where I can get a flicker / strobe light switch and if it's even worth buying? Can anyone here tell me I'll net more dead coyotes with the strobe light action? If so, where do I buy one and how do I install it?

I have a couple spotlights for night hunting with the red filters, and neither of them show me much. I'm really not happy with them at all - just not enough down-range light. One of them is a Western Rivers (mounted to the Ruger 10/22) and the other is a Night Blaster (mounted to the scattergun):

Can anyone here talk me out of buying the Lightforce? I wish someone had talked me out of buying these two spotlights, because I can't see using them for anything other than jackrabbits. By the way, I pictured the Savage 12FV because that is the gun I plan on using with the Lightforce, mostly.
Thank you for your input and God bless,
~Scott

Hey Scott, the Light force lights I have came with a dimmer on the battery pack. Works really well. As for the strobe...never heard of anybody using one. Seems like it would just spook 'em. And it's really not necessary. Randy

I don't see a Flicker / Strobe light accessory in the Lightforce web site. {edit - yes, Lightforce sells a dimmer switch - it comes with the Night Hunt Pack, but this is not the strobe / flicker item in question} I've read some guys in here say the strobe light transfixes the coyote . . . that the coyote comes to the strobe light like a moth to a flame . . . I've never tried it but I want to know if it's true.

Also, I noticed none of you are trying to talk me out of buying the Lightforce 170. Which of you can tell me how far I will be able to see a coyote with the red filter on? And how far away do their eyes show up?

Thank you for your replies . . . keep 'em coming please.
God bless,
~Scott

smallblockfuelie, I'm glad to get some feedback. How far away would you estimate your ability to see the coyote (not the eyes) with the 170 (has 75 watt bulb). I can shine my Western Rivers spotlight with the red filter on it and see reflectors quite a ways away, too . . . maybe 200+ yards at the most.
Thank you for the reply, keep 'em coming.
God bless,
~Scott

I have the hunter 170, and it comes with the dimmer.I would talk with Rory what your best option is on adding a dimmer is!

I have identified a coyote just under 200 yards with this light so far.And I have seen eyes with the light on very dim At the same range. Mine has the 75 wt bulb. You won't think it is all that bright at first. Give it time. It will impress you!

Cougerbait . . . I don't think we're talking about the same thing. The dimmer switch is the battery saving device which comes with the Night Hunt Pack. The device in question is the strobe / flicker switch which causes the spotlight to behave like a strobe light. As I mentioned in my initial post, I'm wondering if there is any truth to the stories about this strobe light effect transfixing the coyotes?
Also, I'm concerned now with your response suggesting I won't think it is bright . . . I have two other spotlights with red filters and I don't think they're bright either. I want something that is going to give me jaw-dropping performance. I want the spotlight WITH the red filter to allow me to identify coyotes 200 yards down range - and I don't mean their eyes - I mean their bodies.
Keep 'em coming, guys, I really need the feedback before I buy this spotlight.
Thank you and God bless,
~Scott

songdogslayer,
The reply to the dimmer switch was in regards the question that smallblockfuelie asked "Does LF have one (dimmer) available that you can add to a light?"

I have spotlights ranging from 200,000 to 10,000,000 cp. So birghtness to me is a wide range. I was a little disappointed when I read the actual cp on the hunter 170 after I bought it. But after playing with it, well it is brighter than t other spot lights i have with a higher rating. The farthest I have had to identify a yote at night so far was 180 yards. I was able to do that with this light. But when using the dimmer, and the light all most off I can see eye's ( they were pigs) close to 300 yards. And you all most couldn't even see the light cast. Plus the Light Force is adjustable like a mag light. All you do is turn the bezel.

If you are that worried, you might want to see if there is any one in your area that has one. It is allot of money! I can under stand being nervous. I have been night hunting of a while now, and this light is by far the nicest spot light I own. And wouldn't think twice about buying another one! I have endorsed this light to my closest hunting buds. I don't have a huge income, but I wish this would have been my first light that I bought, instaed of the same ammount for the cheap stuff first!

Also, The only time I use this light hunter 170 for a basic spot is for when I'm hunting with some one eles and I'm running lights and calls. When I'm hunting by my self I turn the light force on real dim. Then I use a mag light or a Stream light stinger with an amber lense for the spotting, When I get an animal coming in then I turn the gun to them put the light down and turn up the light force. I have to hunt away from the rig. If I was in an area that I could use a high chair I would just run the light force.

I hope this helps! I'm not in any way shape or form trying to get you to buy a light force.

songdogslayer,
Well it looks like you have gotten a lot of answers to you quetions already.

My 170 came with a 75 watt bulb and I replaced it with a 35 watt. With this bulb and "no red" lense, I can see a coyotes body very well at 300 yds.

Now that I have a "soft focus" red lens I am able to use a 50 or 75 watt bulb and see very good to 200 yrds. But with just a clear red lens, I am able to see quite a bit farther.

I also bought, several years ago, a L.Force dimmer switch, this has worked very well for me and it sure saves on your battery.

Strob or Flicker switch.....I wouldn't worry able that. If you have your "beam" focused right and using a red lens, animals will walk right up to you.

Coyote Control

Fellow hunters, I thank you very much for your input. I will probably go ahead and order the Lightforce Night Hunt Pack 170 with the 75 Watt bulb. I will probably be doing most of my hunting alone, so I might be using the Lightforce to spot the coyote and bring it in close. Then pick up a gun with a barrell or scope mounted light (Western Rivers) and drop the hammer when the time comes. I guess I will just hold off on the strobe light - maybe make a seperate post asking about those types of accessories.
Thank you again & God bless,
~Scott

I've heeded silverfox's advice. You can buy the cheap one and cry every time it falls short. Or you can buy the good one, cry once when you pay for it, and use it for life.

I just got a Lightforce also and am very impressed with it, its Great! Its expensive but well worth the investment! I only have the 140 model but i can still see along ways. I also have a nightblaster that hasnt seen any use since i got the lightforce haha.

Happy Hollidays Guys

The cool thing about the light force is you can use the spotlight to scan, once you find an animal, you can quickly attach it to your rifle and keep it on the animal, the hunter pack comes with the quick attach/detach mount. Another cool thing about it is that you can adjust the light so it is perfect for your guns point of impact. Yes it can pick up and identify animal way out there. Top quality product and customer service.
