Lion Attack in CO...

"...likely due to habitat reduction, increased human recreation and human encroachment."

Written like a true moron. We humans have no right to exist; it all belongs to the animals. Give me a break.

Thank goodness the kid's okay. I hope what the Feldmans, and others, learn from this is to always carry some means of self protection, preferably a firearm, when venturing into the wilds, or anywhere else. You'd think, having lived in Israel, someone in their family would have thought of this. Let's all hope the Feldmans are smart enough to say "Never again!" to this kind of horror and take real precautions before they head out to enjoy nature again.

I didn't take it to mean that at all. I didn't see where it said we didn't have the right to exist. It simply means that as people move into occupied territory, these things will happen. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

We certainly have the right to defense, and in this case the lion was tracked down and killed.

If you read the viewer comments you'll find a lot of "save the lions" sentiment

I hadn't read the comments until you mentioned it. Out of 48 comments at the time that I viewed them, I only say 2 or 3 that had "save the lion sentiment".

I have to agree with Hammer, "...likely due to habitat reduction, increased human recreation and human encroachment." is just a statement of fact. It does lead to more attacks. I certainly don't see it it as meaning that human recreation and "encroachment" should be stopped or reduced.

Be aware, carry protection, watch your kids and pets closely, and enjoy your recreation and encroachment. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Okay, then, I must be wrong. Or am I?

My natural inclination when I read anything in the media is that it's coming with a liberal (I hate using that label, because there are many conservative morons, but I can't think of a better one at this time--perhaps someone can help?) slant, and when I read something using that point of view, I can hear the Earth-Firsters and others of that ilk in the background claiming man is an anomaly and an impediment to the natural order. (Yes, I have actually heard environmentalists say this.) Plus, I live in Colorado and I know Denver (home of the news outlet that wrote this story) for what it is: a bastion of the typical big-city stupidity that infects most every city in this country; because of its size and influence, it pushes all of Colorado towards socialism/liberalism. (If someone reading this lives in Denver and thinks and votes otherwise, I'm sorry to lump you in with the rest, and I'm sorry you are in the minority.)

Anyway, that's my take, and I'm sticking to it. Perhaps I'm reading too much into this story, but that's my modus operandi when reading practically anything from the media, and it's served me well over the years. Even if the reporter writing the story didn't intend any slight against man with the wording, she has been influenced by the environmentalists nonetheless when she unthinkingly uses their ideas/philosophy.

Okay, that's all I have to say on the subject; I'll say no more. Go ahead and parse my sentences/thoughts and rip me a new one, I can take it. Once you've had a drill sergeant screaming in your face at 6 a.m., thoughtfully pointing out a deficiency you didn't even know you had, not much else gets to you.

I can tell it didn't have any effect on you. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

If you were still willing to say something on this subject, I would ask you, "How would you have said it?"

Specifically, I am referring to the wording you don't agree with.

I sure won't "rip you a new one", sounds like that has already been done. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I agree with everyone!

Elks, same thing in Washington. I believe wholeheartedly that running lions with dogs makes lions fear humans. Plain and simple. They equate people, and people with dogs. Same-o Same-o. I'm convinced it makes a HUGE difference in lion behavior.

DAL, the word "encroachment" implies that the animals belong and the humans don't. I think the choice of words was deliberate.

Yellowhammer, I thought it was a really good article, and aside from the word in question, it was balanced and not written to inflame. Good story, a victory, and a good example of response to a lion attack. When the Dad caught up and was squaring off with the cat I was a little worried, but then when big brother crashed onto the scene, I said, "Oh yeah, there you go! Way to go, guys!"

NASA, lots of drivel in the comments anyway!

nmleon, great quote! "...enjoy your recreation and encroachment." Priceless!

Casper wyoming has been here for much longer then a lions lifetime so are the three or four lions seen in town every year encroaching on human habitat or just following the deer that live in town. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif
i have seen one two blocks from my house. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif i live about 600 yrds from the Platte river and about the same from Casper creek the deer follow the river and eat in the parks 1 block from the house and eat any red flower that blooms in the yard the same day it blooms.
lions live close to humans everywhere and vice versa.
people think the lions and deer are more worried about our presence then the animals do. they get used to us when they grow up near us. we have deer that are as friendly as dogs here in town. lions have figured this out and come to town hunting them. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif
the lion i saw stopped and looked both ways before crossing the street sat down and let a car pass. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif he was not afraid of being in town. I'll go as far as say he might have grown up and been taught to hunt in town deer by its mother. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif
one year i remember they caught three lions in town doing exactly what lions do. two at Garfield elementary school, and one in the parking garage at the hospital.
they were hunting the young and the sick /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

My sentiments exactly!

Why have humans risen to the top of the food chain?

Because we taste like %^&$...

Why are there mountain lions in Iowa and Missouri now? Lots of deer and not many people shooting anything...

The world has become a bunch of people that never leave the suburbs and are suprised when nature survives without them.
