A couple of us are looking to film a DIY elk, deer or antelope hunt in Colorado.

What counties would you suggest for elk/deer? Looking for proably 2nd season rifle. Needs to be lots of public land and leftover tags.

Same thing for Antelope?

Thanks for any help.

There are zero OTC/over the counter tags for deer in the state. You must draw for a tag. Depending on which unit you decide to hunt elk in , you may or may not be able to draw a deer tag for that same unit with out PP's. There are several of the OTC elk rifle units. As long as you're in the mtns., you're in elk country. I really can't recommend a unit for ya, as the units that I hunt/have hunted are either OTC archery, or take PP's to hunt.
As far as antelope, there aren't any OTC rifle tags in the state. There were some left over tags this year, as in many years, but they were all doe tags for rifle. Most antelope will be found on private land. However, CO. has a big game access program, walk in on private lands, that with a $40. permit allows hunters access to private lands that are in the program. For instance, I didn't draw the antelope tag that I wanted, but I was able to buy a left over doe tag, purchase a $40. permit to access the private lands in the BGAP, and without even setting foot in the area that I have a tag for now, I no I have several thousand acres to hunt when I get there.
Unless the CDOW decides to extend the BGAP, this is the last year for it. Which is unfortunate, because IMO, it's a worth while program. So, time will tell if they will continue the program in the future years.
If a guy thinks that he will hunt CO. any time in the future, I'd suggest applying every year for PP's at least. That way, when the time arises to apply for elk, and or deer, you're not so limited on where you can hunt.

Thanks SongDog. Your guys GFP website is quite confusing. Looks like you have a ton of left over tags for all species. But they just must be does/cows. Thanks

Look into "Landowner Vouchers". They tend to get real cheap right before the season.

There are some very good elk units that are OTC if you are willing to put up with some red tape, and I mean a lot!!!

You are welcome to pm me if you have any questions. I may or may not be able to help.........

Here is a bull we photographed in an OTC elk unit, but it took 10 years to draw a buck deer tag in the same unit. We took the pix by holding a digital camera up to a spotting scope. Kinda poopie photography, but an obviously nice bull...

I also happen to know of some antelope buck vouchers available for $400 ea with exclusive land access for the first two days of the season.

Let me know if I can answer any questions........

I have a 3rd season cow tag for unit 55 and will buy a unlimited antlered permit for 2nd season in which I plain to hunt 55 and or 54

both units are north of gunnison split by hwy 135 the continental divide on the east and black canyon hwy on the west, hwy 50 on the south and kebler pass road and cont divide on the north

Lots of elk in 54 big unit mostly wilderness but there are some big bulls out there. 55 has some wilderness but much more accessible via ATV or 4x4
that also means more hunters especially in the taylor park area

I hunt as far north as I can near crested butte usually antler-less and have seen some decent bulls, but never when I have a bull tag (that is why i hunt antler-less)
