You both make good points.
Good old-fashioned fistfight between a couple boys who need to knock heads - not a major deal. Until one of them brings dad's nine the next day and "busts a cap in" the other one. That's the problem I was trying to point out. Kids feel the need to escalate things above the scuffle. Why? Who knows. TV and movies? Violent video games? Pervasive gangsta culture? All the above?
woodguru, you're right about bulllying vs. a regular ol' fight. I think GC and I kinda headed off a little. Bullying should not be tolerated in any form. That's where the mostly ridiculous zero tolerance policies can do some good. The problem is they take away the adults' ability to apply reason to a situation so that a little playground scuffle or fingernail clippers get treated the same as terrorist attack.
