Live dog decoys

Anybody see that tv show using trained dogs to lure coyotes within range of shooters? Amazing! Any comments?
 
I read about it in a magazine I get. I have a lab who would work out great, if he didn't want to eat the small ones.

In one of the areas that I trap coyotes, there has been a stray dog running the area for about 6 months that I know of. She survived the hunting seasons and also my traps all fall. Well last weekend I caught the dog. The trap was on a 10 foot chain with a drag. Well I don't like releasing strange dogs from a long chain. In this case releasing the dog wasn't a problem. Seemed to be a nice dog considering that it has been running wild. I figured that that dog would either run for the hills or it was going to follow me. Follow me is was it did. Since I was goig to do some calling in the area, I wasn't going to let this dog get in my way. So off we went. I got on one side of a fence line, the dog stayed on the other and layed down licking it's paw. After calling for few minutes I heard the dog growl and she had her head up looking in the direction behind me. The dog was acurate, but I couldn't get the shot. Anyway I can see that dog can be helpful. If they can't see the coyote, they can still wind them.
 
NEWBIE.....While I was walking back to the truck, I was thinking to myself "This is not my dog and this is not my problem" well she jumped in the cab and I drove to the land owners house to see if they had any idea who the dog belonged to. They didn't know. After spending a little time with it, they decided to keep her. Also there was vet there checking on their animals. The vet took the dog to see what she could do to nurse it back to health. Well the dog was so full of heart worm she put it down. Was to bad......... I wonder what people get out of dropping these dogs off? Do they really think they can survive? If heart worm wouldn't have gotten this one; by spring I'm sure the coyotes would have......So no it didn't work out. I do have a cur dog I'm working with though, he doesn't like coyotes dead or alive

Bopeye the best source for coyote dogs that I have seen is the Coyote Gods forum.

Just be sure to bow when you enter and you will get a lot of good info.
 
Bopeye..... If you have an interest in decoy dogs, You should check out the Doggin Coyote videos. Well worth the money.

Onshot.....My dog is a Blackmouth Cur/Bluetick cross. I could have bought the purebred cur but I really liked the idea of that cross for coyotes.

As far as training him; I really haven't had to do much. He just doesn't like coyotes. The best trainers I have are the coyotes themselve's. They come into the yard and he runs the out. After they get out so far they run his butt back home. It's like they play a game of tag. I'd let this go for awhile but the coyotes and the dog were getting more aggressive toward each other. So for the safety of the dog I shot the coyotes. He's still a young dog and could get into trouble easily.

Sounds like a good cross. He should have plenty of nose power and heart from that cross. I have Original Mountain Curs, and Treeing Walkers. Check out my website, www.treerattler.com We just have some fun with it. I would suggest checking out the Kemmer Stock Mountain Cur website. Not sure of the URL. I think their is a link to it on my site. They are gritty little rascals and should make a fine coyote dog. I understand about the game of tag. If the coyotes got on him hard and him still young that could ruin him forever.

That is the main reason that I want to kill coyotes. They are running my dogs off of the tree and harrassing them in the woods when hunting. My old walker dog is about 85 lbs and he can tote his weight too friend, but when 4 or 5 coyotes start surrounding him and aggravating him he will vacate! LOL! The only problem I have is getting a shot on one of the rascals. It is at night when I coon hunt and it is impossible to get close enough to the coyotes in the thick woods when they are aggravating my dog. If I could get one look at one, well it would be all over but the crying and making excuses for Mr coyote.

A friend of mine had an idea too. We put a Pit Bull dog with my walker, when the coyotes start their crap... uh oh, bull dog jaws all over them. That didn't work out too well. The coyotes are FAST!!!! It was a joke at first, them we just did it for the heck of it. It was interesting to say the least.

Let me know if I can help you out with some cur dogs. I know quite a few top breeders.

i do alot of calling and i have taken one or both of my terriers along on occasion. the coyotes i call in make a strait run at my terriers. they get a little to close for comfort sometimes. when i hit the coyote my terriers jump him. they have gotten a few punctures and scrapes from pissed off downed coyotes. gotta be careful. i use a Jack Russel and a Rat terrier.
