Hey guys, starting off loading for the 60-70 grainers for my AR (223) just looking to see what powder I should get... All I have on hand is IMR 4198...

Tac?

I use TAC with my 60gr V-Max and a 1/12 twist and have good results... I've never taken it above that weight though..

I've used W-748 with some 64gr Winchester PSP rounds with good results as well in my 1/9 twist...I would think TAC would be about the same..

Casey,

What bullet are you trying to run and for what purpose? Calling I assume?

TAC and Varget would most likely fit your purposes well...

Gonna try some 70 VLD's and some 68 BTHP's.

Yep, for calling. Wasnt too impressed with the 40 vmax. Gonna run them 2900-3000 with the hopes that they wont destroy a kitty of one comes in when I dont have my shotgun in hand.

I have a couple kills with the 68 hornady at 2900fps and get the impression they are a pretty tough bullet (very little damage with exits, even on head shots). Accurate as can be in a 1:8 Tikka but was hoping for a little more destruction. Any one else shoot these?

I'm pushing a 70 gr Barnes with 24.5 grns of Tac and an off-brand 75 gr lead free bullet is showing no pressure signs up to 24.0 grns.

I'm also using 25.0 grns to push a 63 gr Barnes TSX.

I believe it will be difficult to get 2,900-3,000 fps from a 20" 1x8 with 68 Hornady. My Savage bolt 1x9 with 22" will just get 2,925 fps with 26g of Varget and 69 Noslers. I've tried TAC, IMR 4064, Benchmark, and IMR 8208 XBR and can't get better than 2,800 from any of them without going overmax.

Perhaps you can get there with H4895 or maybe A2520, but I still think it will be tough in a 20". Maybe somebody who has shot them can give you some data.

There are lots of good bullets in between 40 and 68-70. Just wondering why you don't try the new 53v-max with high BC. Personally I like the 50vmax with bt over benchmark which gives me better than 3,300 fps winter and summer and hits hard. Hope you find something that works good for you.

I spoke with Hornady about using the 68gr BTHP and they did not recommend as a predator bullet. I also recently tried the 40gr VMax for coyotes and Bobcats and it was pretty dismal results two bad blow-ups also had two cats ran off... found one 120yds away the other was never recovered.
The 40gr were from a .221 FB and now I am trying the 50gr Sierra Blitz bullet. The 40gr Sierra BlitzKing actually worked very well so I may end up going back to it.....
Here are the two recent blow-ups. Those are entrance wounds.

Greetings from SE South Carolina. I've been contemplating Varmint/Predator hunting and found this site while researching. Been lurking for a couple of weeks and looks to be a great resource with knowledgeable/friendly members who are eager to assist. Hope ya'll don't mind me chiming in here? I'm not a bench rest shooter by any stretch. Just a guy that likes to reload and shoot.
Hope this helps.
