Loaded/unloaded in Vehicle

It's illegal to have a loaded gun in the vehicle in Oklahoma. Which I think is completely stupid. Personally I'm not a fan of unloaded guns. From a young age I was taught to treat every gun I saw around the house as if it were loaded. Because they were loaded.

I've known of more accidents that happened from "unloaded" guns than any other kind of gun. If you know it's loaded you won't develop stupid habits and shoot holes in your house,vehicle,pets or loved ones. Unloaded guns suck. They're dangerous.

A good buddy of mine likes to keep his guns unloaded. He's shot a 25-06 in his truck and a muzzleloader in his living room and straight through the front door.

Colorado there is NO round in chamber at any time for long guns magazine full is ok except during any big game season, then nothing allowed in mag pistols can be loaded
 
In the truck, unloaded, usually stowed horizontally. No way I would set a loaded rifle in the back seat of my truck, pointed at the other side where my partner could walk in front of it. And no one I'm gonna hunt with would do that either. In the RZR, while between stands, secured in vertical racks in the front corners of the cab, loaded. I feel this is perfectly safe as there is never any part of anyone above the roof line. If I was forced to carry them horizontally, unloaded all the way.
 
NV illegal to have a round chambered in long gun while in or on a vehicle. Mag ok. I won't even keep a mag in my long guns while in the truck. Loaded rifle/shotgun is most common violation in NV too! It's a rule in my truck for any of my hunt partners also.
 
Only time I don't have a round in the chamber is for 1.2 seconds right after I shoot a coyote. The safest gun is a loaded gun, and mine are always, and I mean always loaded. Sure people get shot getting in and out of the truck, but more get shot by their buddy while he is clearing his gun. Also, how many times have you heard someone say, "I thought it was loaded" right after he shot his buddy? If you hunt with me you best get use to a loaded gun in my truck. I would just assume you leave your's loaded as well. Just don't point the dumb thing at me.

We all need to stop and think when hunting with a partner. Life is precious and could be over in a blink of an eye. Be careful!


 
In NY it's illegal to have a loaded gun on or in a vehicle.A friend was ticketed when he left his loaded gun leaning against his truck.ML's can be left loaded but the primer cap or flint must be removed.
 
I thought about this and wondered is there anything that can be done to quiet the loading of an AR, if quiet is what your after this is what I came up with. first keep the carrier clean and lubed, next use a chrome or at least broken in bolt carrier. The other thing is after doing a stand eject the unfired shell as normal, but also pull out the mag, either actuate the bolt stop to hold the bolt open. Or let it ride forward before putting the mag back in. None of this is unusual. But instead of putting the unfired round back in the mag, just stick it in your coat pocket. Then when getting out at the next stand with mag removed and with the bolt catch holding the bolt back, hold the gun down and just drop the shell from your coat pocket right down into the chamber. This keep the bolt from having to strip one off the magazine. let the bolt gently down on top of the case with the charging handle, then thumb the forward assist. When doing this you will get a very distinct CLICK as the extractor slips over the case rim and the bolt lugs lock up. There is no doubt the bolt is in battery. then stick mag back in and do the stand as normal. a Click is as quiet as I can load the gun. way better than charging the crap out of it.

Regardless of state laws or regs I've never been an advocate of having loaded long guns in a vehicle. IMO it's an accident waiting to happen.

How is a loaded long gun any more dangerous than a handgun?

Does mag loaded, empty chamber count?
 
Always loaded, I get mad at my buddies who want to jump out of the car when we are trying to be super quite and immediately jack a shell in. Does not make much sense to me, pretty much a rule in my truck now.

You will make more noise putting the mag in than it will stripping a round from the mag.

Exactly.
 
here in Michigan the only firearms that can be carried loaded in the vehicle are those that fall under our CPL rules.

so unless you hunt with an AR pistol, or a conventional revolver/handgun - a loaded firearm is a big no-no.

detachable magazines can be left loaded, but not inserted into the magwell. attached magazines (internal/blind box mags, tube fed mags, etc) must be unloaded during transport.
 
In CT we're lucky to have guns at all. Long guns must be unloaded in a vehicle. Mags can be full, but unattached. CCW on our person can be loaded, unloaded if not carried. Long guns must be unloaded until beyond 500' of occupied dwelling for hunting, yet no minimum for target shooting (I wouldn't trust a CO to know that though).
