Have picked a powder /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif(H4831SC) and bullet /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif(Hornady 139 gr. SST) and am ready to test loads for deer outta my Rem 700 Mtn. Rifle. Was wondering a couple things, one, does anyone have any experience with the SST on deer size game? Two, does anyone use H4831SC outta their 280 Rem? There sure is a large range from MIN. to MAX. in this combo for the 280 according to the new Hornady manual, anyone have it narrowed down to a pet load? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif Thanks folks, Rich

I really like the Hornady 139 gr. bullets but I think the SST is a little to explosive. I'd go with the 139 SPBT interlock. The powder you picked is a good one. Two others to consider are RL19 and RL22.

Maybe you are not interested in my load. However I am shooting a 140 Nos Accubond with Rem cases, federal 210match primers, and Reloader 19 charge close to max. I used the same load with a 139 Horn BT and had excelent accuracy. My rifle is a Rem 700 cdl ( 24 inch barrel). My dad has killed several deer with 140 Sierra Pro hunter flat base, and 139 Hornady flat base bullets with great success. I really like the 280 for the best all round deer rifle caliber. A Rem 700 mountain rifle handles every bit as well as a carbine.

I have shot 139 SST in 280 and they seem fairly light jacketed. Also had 1 bullet make a 90 degree turn in a medium sized buck a few years ago. He probably weighed 140# field dressed. Hit him at the neck shoulder juncture and it penetrated about 4 inches, turned and destroyed the top of the heart and found it in the leading edge of the liver. Needless to say he never took a step. Just seemed pretty odd.

I shoot the 280 Rem in my Encore. I have been shooting the 140 grain Winchester Ballistic Silvertip with great success. I dropped a good sized doe where it stood last year at 271 yards. She never drew another breath (I got it on video, it was so cool) It entered through the neck, turned the heart to gelatin and the bullet never exited. I love it when it's a good clean kill.

I haven't tried H-4831sc in my 280 loads yet, but I probably will. Since folks are offering up their favorite 280 Deer loads, I'll add mine...

Norma case
Fed 210M primer
140 Gr TSX
56.6 Gr R-22

Shoots cloverleafs in my #1 @ 100 yds.

H-4831sc seems to shoot real good in about everything I've tried. My 300WSM, my friend's 30-06 and even my brother's 6mm Rem behind a 100 gr Sierra. I feel sure it'd do a good job in a 280.

I have been shooting a Remington 700 Mt. Rifle in .280 cal. for about 20 years. My favorite load is 58gr. of H4831 behind a 139gr. Hornady with a Remington 9 1/2 primer. They shoot close to 3000fps and shoot under an inch at 100 yds. I have killed antelope, deer, one bear and numerous pigs with that load. The only time I change the load is for elk. I am sure the load would kill an elk. I just like a little heavier bullet for elk.

Ken43, What style of 139 gr. Hornady bullet do you use? Thanks to all who have replied thus far, your input was very helpful in bullet selection and I maybe going to a different pill in the same weight. Rich

I have been shooting the spirepoint 139gr. flatbase. I tried the boattail bullets, however, I got better accuracy and velocity out of the flat base. Hornady has a new 139gr. Interbond that I have been dying to try, however, I have so many of the flatbase loaded it will probably take me several years to shoot all of them. I looked at the 139 Interbond as maybe one bullet to do everything.
