My new 243 ackley should be done in a week. It is on a trued and lapped 700 action. 30" broughton barrel 1 in 8 twist. Bobby Hart LRT laminated stock. I am planning on using either hornady 105 grain A-Max or Berger 105 grain VLD's. I have a box of both. Any loads using these bullets would be appreciated. Rob.

30" ?... holy **** !

All you need to do is knock them on the head with a 30" bbl.....no bbl wear ever!.....

Im working up loads for a pal who is having a 243AI made, but nothing over an 87 vmax as his is a 1/12" twist.

Heck yeah Tim, then when the throat is worn I can cut a couple inches of it and its like new again, and then cut a couple more inches out of it..... See where I am headed with this. I forgot to mention that this is strictly a bench gun for ringing syeel out to 1000 yards and 1200 yards. Maybe on a bench for rock chucks too!

+1

I did this often!

You just need to get the straight unturned blank or a Max Heavy varmint with " of straight on the breech end.

With an 8" twist, I would plan on cutting off 3-4", those slow twists with heavy bullets eat up some lands with firecracking. The reason for this is heavy bullets with slower twist maintains the heat/pressure longer than lighter bullets which are faster with a slower twist.

Yeah ackleyman it is between 6-8" straight on the breech end. I am hoping to push 105 grains around 3200-3300 fps. But I am not sure if its possible.

I really like H4831 with 105 Amaxs. I know I can run them at 3200-3300, but my accuracy seems to be in the 3150-3175 range. In fact, I don't know if this has happened in anybody else's rifle, but mine and my dad's accuracy node with 105 grain bullets has been in that velocity range with our .243 AIs.

Work up to it, But 42.5 to 43.0grs of H4350 and a 105VLD with the 30" tube you will be right close to 3200 - 3250! My 243AI shoots 3050 with a 25" Shilin tube with the load above, it like's the VLD's better than the A-Max's also, but every tube is different.

I see .
With that long pipe you will be closer to 999 than 1000 at the range !

I'm shooting 47.2 of the non-shortcut H4831. It fills up the case really well. I'm not sure how much it makes a difference, but my ES has been as low as 9 fps, and it stays under 15fps. I have found that swirling my powder charges does make a difference in velocity. Not sure why. I like the 105 Amaxs because they will expand at all ranges on small targets. My 1044 and 1109 yard rockchucks both had decent sized holes in them, whereas my dad's 1030 yard rockchuck he shot with VLDs just penciled through and the chuck took 30 seconds to die.

44-46 grains of R22 is accurate but slower.

Same here. I'm running '17 with both 105 AMax's and VLD's. 3250 in my 24"er.

Robb: My load with the Berger VLD's is seated .01" into the lands. Since it was throated for A-maxes originally, that makes the OAL 2.78" which is too long for my magazine. Since i'm using my rifle about like you are planning to use yours, it's not a big deal. I'm hearing some reports of good accuracy jumping the VLD's so I may try shortening them up to mag length and seeing what happens.

I'm using 44.0 gr of H4831SC for 3156 fps.

How's your load developement coming?

Load development is coming slowly, as I am still breaking in the barrel. I am going to load up some vld's or amaxes for the range tomorrow's fireforming session and see if they like jumping a little bit.
