Locating Coyotes

I'm sure this has been asked many times before, but I promised I searched and didn't find the answer I was looking for.

I mainly have hunted the deserts in my area because I know it is littered with them. Curiosity has me now hunting new places far and near trying to locate coyotes.

When approaching a new area, how do you know if there are coyotes even around?

Let me continue on by saying, I know of obvious things to look for like tracks, scat, and dens as well as resources such as food, shelter, and water, but let me try to illustrate my question with an example.

For example, if I pull into a brand new area that could have thousands of acres of public land that I could possibly hunt, what would be your first choice of action? Do you spend all day looking for signs of coyotes? Do you look for a good-looking place that you think may hide a coyote (sixth sense)? Or do you use location methods like sirens?

Some other problems I have are limited time (one day) in these areas and not meeting any or there simply are no locals in the area to speak with about coyotes.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated! Perhaps I'm watching too many youtube videos that always make it look too easy to hunt in these "new" areas.

if you are just going to a new place to hunt for 1 day, I would get there before daylight and try to get some to howl. if i heard any, thats where i would head to for the 1st stand. hopefully you hear a couple groups and you make a game plan.

after that i would drive the roads and find scat and the first callable spot nearest the fresh scat.

you can waist all of your time trying to find all kinds of sign, but fresh scat does not lie!

Lol! I am out there calling, that's why I have the question. I'm just trying to get a feel from those who try out new, unknown areas how they approach choosing a specific place to call. And unfortunately I can't call every hour of every day, so I do watch Youtube videos (and read this forum!) when time permits. Don't worry though, it doesn't cut into my coyote time

Excellent advice! Thank you for sharing! This seems like a very reasonable approach. I'll hopefully get to give it a go tomorrow in a new place. Unfortunately, I don't think I'll make it in the morning, but will give it a go at dusk.

Scouting is so important..Ive hunted a few new areas this year and I'm going at all different times to try and locate dawgs....mornings and evening.....one of my first sets....a coyote sounded off right before sundown....hav nt heard the yote in 3 weeks...so I think running and gunning in new unscouted areas is the way to go....you may find scat like I did last week....so I know their there...Rusty

Just call it. When locating with howls coyotes in the area are likely to come to those howls after you've left smell you and be on high alert. Another thing if a coyote can hear your howls hes likely heard you pull up and will hear you start your truck..
