Long or Short Barrel 223

Im in the process of purchasing a 18.5 inch bull barrel SVT Kimber. But Im having second thoughts, now Im thinking the pro varmint with a 24" barrel may be more acurate. Your thoughts and input would be greatly appreciated

Thanks Keith

Accuracy, that is, group size at 100yds, won't be affected by the length of your barrel. Just the quality of your barrel and how much care was taken installing it will make a difference. Kimbers are semi-custom rifles I believe...and they all shoot well from what I've heard.

Muzzle velocity and effective range might be of some concern. But I think that out in the field at 200/300yds your not going to notice much diff. The coyotes certainly won't be able to tell the velocity difference between a long and short barrel.

If your gonna use the rifle mainly for calling....get the shorter barrel. Use it for a season or two and if you decide you don't like it...just rebarrel.

Or...
Compromise - a Remington Model Seven with a 20" barrel! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Thanks for the replys, I would realy like to hear from somebody That owns an SVT 223 or if anybody knows of any articles on this gun. Im worried I will buy an expensive gun that wont meet my expectations, Im also interested in other guns That have the short bull barrel anything in the $1,100 Price range Target varmint

I personally think that both rifles would be a great choice.
I really love the provarmint. Check out Field and Stream, Febuary issue, theres a field test on the SVT. They state that it is one of two, most accurate production rifles ever tested. If your interested in an article on the Provarmint look at the March/April issue of Rifle Shooter.
There is a pretty extensive article on the PV in there. Hope this helps.

Did you ever buy the Kimber SVT? I just intercepted one at Cabelas, they were just putting it out on the rack. I was not familiar with this model, but it is almost exactly what I have been comtemplating building on a Rem 700 action.

I have 5 days to make up my mind on this one.
