--- Long Range 30-06 Build?---

I have a long range 30-06. I never regretted building it either. Mine is on a Pre-64 Model 70 with a AMU contour Krieger 4 groove. Its about 28" long, maybe a little more. I made mine an Ackley and never regretted that either. When I built it the McMillan A-2 was the new hot stock...1991 or 92. I waited longer for the stock than I did the barrel. A Timney trigger and a Tubb titanium Speedlock firing pin was added. I have since built several 308's, many 7mm-08s and a 260 or two, 5R and polygonal rifling types, A5 stocks and different triggers, actions you name it, but the old battle axe is still the most accurate rifle I own. Put it this way...I have a lot of long range type very nice rifles to choose from but if I absolutely positively have to make a long shot I don't have to think about which one to grab. Believe it or not one disadvantage to the 30-06 is finding really nice brass.

Uhmmmm.......I think you guys covered a lot of territory, but my input is plan to use a 10 twist minimum, and throat the barrel appropriately to shoot 190's and above. I would also give the nod to bergers. I would not plan to set it up on a repeater action. I have been shooting a 308 with a stout 30" barrel with 190 gr. smk and have been happy till recently when groups have opened up. I am now going to 6.5x47 throated for the 140 gr. berger hybrid. Just my .02

Thanks again everyone!

Does anybody have any specific numbers on throating this thing? I undertand the idea behind I don't have the understanding to actually come up with figures for a reamer.

A few side notes, I hope to set up up using modified AICS magazines. The single shot thing just doesn't do it for me... I know I'd be unhappy with it. The twist will definitely be 10 and I'll look into the bergers. I have quite a few 208s so I want to see if they'll work. If not, I'll open up my mind and buy some other stuff.

Chefpierre- What caused your groups to open up?

Not necessarily; you could chamber it with a standard reamer and then use a neck and throat reamer to cut the throat. For long range accuracy, I would recommend custom reamer, however. That way you know the throat is concentric with the chamber. I would also seriously consider a tight neck, and use neck-turned brass.

I would not...

Use a "No turn" reamer and use Norma brass and you will be shooting a winner - neck turning is fading as a mandated technique.

You need 3 to 5 thou minimum clearance, but you can have more and still be fine.

I beleive the barre is shot out. The most recent f-class match it held the nine ring.
