long range deer, 7mm rem or 300 win mag?

i have a sporter length .270 win with a 22" barrell using 130's on deer. looking to get someting flatter faster and more knockdown power for long range white tail and mule deer. ill use this for out west in the wide open anything 300 yds to about 500yds my max. the 270 will still be used for short distance and bush hunting. the gun i wanna get is a browning x-bolt carbon stainless fluted but both only come in 26" barrel, so this is why it wont be replacing my .270 and will only be used for the long stuff in open areas. wondering what would be a better choice as a step up from the .270, and compliment the 270 well. 7mm with 140g or a 300 win mag with 150s?

That I can understand.

I prefer 7mm to either of others, but truth is, all 3 will take deer handily @ 500yds. I guess try for something different........

My guess is the .270 will take a deer well past 500 yards but yes you should buy a new rifle lol.

300mag would be my choice but 7mag is a great caliber too

I owned both a 7mm Rem Mag and .300 H&H Mag. I sold the 7mm because it kicked as hard as the .300 did and I just felt the .30 cal was more versatile.

Nothing against the 7mm Mag but where I live the larger calibers don't get used much.

140's in the 7mm is a waste. 150's in a 300 win mag, is an even bigger waste of a caliber. Stay with the 270 if that's all the heavier your going to go.

I guess ill be silly here. Ive dropped really big muleys at 400+ with a 100gr 25-06. Deer are not at all hard to take. Ive got/had both 7 and 300 mags, neither are a caliber i take for deer.

When i was younger i really went for the absolute biggest bang i could find. A field mouse was at least 30-06

The more hunted and the more familiar i got with ballistics, the more i appreciated smaller calibers.

Im still building a 358 winchester though and wont get rid of my biggens

But for the op, toss a coin. Your game will never know te difference.

Between the two I'd go with the 7mm.However since you're talking deer I would also consider the .257 Webby.Flat'n fast with less recoil.

Id go with the 300win mag. The 7mm remington is a .284" bullet and the .270 is a .277". There isnt much gain to really get a 7mm when you already have a good flat shooting .27 caliber. Which is why I would bump up to the 300win mag. I used to own a 7mm rem but sold it to get a .270 because it was much cheaper to reload, find ammo for and shoot. The PBR of the 7mm is like 320yards while the .270 is around 305yards. To me its not worth the extra recoil of the 7mm mag to gain an xtra 15 or 20 yards of shooting distance. The 7mm mag is also harder to find ammo for when compared to the 300. There are lots of bullets, ammo & brass that are cheaper for the 300 mag also. Just my opinion. I have a weatherby .270 and a thompson center 300 win mag for all my big game hunting. I really like both of them.

Another fly in the ointment. If you are going to build 280 AI, it uses 1/3 less powder than the 7mm mag an almost identical numders. If you are buying 300 mag. The 280 is a blast to shoot alot less recoil than the mag. Have fun w/whatever you decide.

I've hunted mulies with all 3 calibers (270 WIN, 7mm Rem Mag., and 300 Win Mag). They all worked just fine. I just took whatever felt right that particular day.
My fav is my 7mm though. It's an older Weatherby Vanguard that I bought back in 1969 or 70. It's taken quite a few animals in its day.

had the chance to feel the 7mm at the gun shop today, and honestly the 26" barrell feels waay too long for my liking. i fell in love with the 270 wsm which in the same gun has a 23" barrel and will be the same overall length as a long action with the 22" barrel. ill be doing a little more reading around but from what i see the 270 wsm is exactly on par ballistic wise, if not slightly better than the 7mm mag in comparing 130's 140's and 150's. so this may be the route i go. just gotta make sure the 23" is gonna be enough for the short mag?

You read like someone who just wants a new rifle.lol. I'm not a 270 fan by any means, but why not work up some hotter reloads in your 270 win ? You can come within 5-6 inches of drop of the 270 wsm in the same weight ball @ 500 yds with the same factory ammo. You'll probably find something that shoots tighter as well, which to me would be more important then holdover.
