long range deer, 7mm rem or 300 win mag?

I own all 3 chamberings. For long range deer hunting, all 3 will work extremely well. But if you want to get "technical" about it, the 7mm is the best, ballistically.

That said, a deer, will never know the difference........
 
I like em all for the purposes stated. But since you mentioned the 270 WSM, I'll toss my 2 cents experience into the mix. Love it. Light, and handy. The only new brass I can find in my city with regularity. Factory ammo is easy to find, but not like the 7mm or 300 during normal economic times. My rifle likes to shoot 150 gr ballistic tips into .649" outside measured, 5 round groups at 100 yards. Running about 3078 fps average. Accubonds with the same load shoot lousy at .743" outside at 100 yards.

So a .466" deer rifle is "lousy" to you? Really?

For the extra .094" I'd happily take the Accubond over the BT.

So exactly what rifle is this that shoots .372" 5 shot groups?
 
7mm rem. mag. for elk, deer, and bear!!!!!!

long range i consider 500 and over. a remington sendero. it is not the caliber as much a rifle capable of more precision . like a remington sendero, winchester laredo or a weatherby accumark. if i was going to buy a factory rifle for 300-500, a sako or a tikka.
 
I'd look for a 22" 7mm RM and load it with 175gr RN's and use it for a brush gun and load the 270 up with 140gr Game Kings for your LR rig. I did that for years and it worked great. Then I built a 35 Whelen and made a pair of moosehide moccasins(to sneak closer) and got rid of the other two.

That just seems backwards.
 
I fell into the same trap. I went on a Newfoundland moose hunt and felt I needed something to reach out and touch. The Sako 7 RM I bought did just that, and shot very well. However, in the hunting field, I ended up taking my moose shot at about 30 yards! A 6.5 of any ilk would have done just fine.

Maybe I'm getting a bit old, but I just think the word "hunting" should mean to get close enough to an animal that it can harvested with one shot cleanly. Not that that cannot be done at 500 yards, but the small micro errors at such a range exist that a wounded animal can be the result.

It's rare the critter that can't be stalked to within 200 yards or so.

Owning a new gun is always a must, and if another caliber has your fancy, have at it. But be ethical.
