long range scope

Hey guys. Looking for a good quality scope primarily used for long range shooting. .308 caliber

I have been looking at the Leupold Mark 4 in 8.5-25x50. And thought about ordering it from their custom shop, with the custom turrets for bullet drop.

Cost isn't much of a factor, so can you give me some good recommendations?

Thanks

I would suggest nightforce, imo I think its a much better value and lot better scope, although it may be a little heavier than the leupold

I ran a couple MK 4's the glass is good, but when you engage the turrets they are not nearly as "crisp" and clean as the NXS's. NF has some good glass as well, but IMHO I would take a hard look @ the NightForce the repeatability and the click value is better than Leupold...
ALSO, if I were you (depending on how far you are shooting) I would look into the standard turrets not the custom, as your variables and conditions are always changing, why pay for the custom cut turrets when you can dial the minutes or mils just as easy!!!

leupold scopes dont track its like they refuse to return to zero,... i will only run a leupold if i get it for a steal... +1 on the nxs

The world of long range hunting is pretty big. What do you consider long range? What type of hunting?

What method do you plan to use for holdoffs? Dial elevation and hold for wind, hold for elevation and wind, etc.? What do you plan to use for ballistics: range card or computer? Do you prefer either BDC turrets or a particular reticle?

I've never had an issue with my Leupolds tracking. I've ran everything from 3.5-10's with turrets to 8.5-25's from 100yds-1000 yds and I've been more then pleased.

On a side note, I much prefer my NSX over my Leupold's. Turrets are nicer and so is the ret selection. The new Leupy MK4's are over priced, but that's Mnt opinion.

Look into a NF, you'll be more then pleased.

I own a NightForce 5.5-22x56 NXS and wouldn't trade it for the world. The scope is extremely clear, the clicks are very positive and the Zero Stop puts the icing on the cake. While it ran me nearly $2,000, I firmly believe in the saying "buy once, cry once".

The NF are hard to beat in the $2k range.

You might also consider looking at the Vortex LR scopes. I just bought a Viper 4-16x44NS LR and while I did have some problems in the beginning it is a great scope. I have yet to shoot it but the glass is clear and the clicks are positive. The LR models come with 2 different reticles and a custom turret is also available.

The trijicon accupoint is awesome! They also have the TARS, but it is spendy buy amazing.

Look at those, you wont regret it.

it's been said but how far is "long range" for you? some guys its 300 yds some guys it's a mile. what are you going to use it for? do you want/need illuminated ret?

you may want to take a look at IORs as well. glass is better than NF and the fat turret is nice to dial with (25moa/revolution). but they are heavier than NF. used ones are a bargain.

you may also be interested in the Zeiss conquest with target turrets. glass is also as good as or better than NF, turrets are decent, weight is better than any of the others mentioned so far. drawback is internal adjustment. but with a 20moa rail you should get to 1k yds depending on your load.

if those don't work you can move up to the S&B, Premier, and upper end zeiss realm that i've been trying to stay away from because they're a little rich for me.

Cost no problem buy a 5x25x58 US Optics (I did will never happen again $$$$).
Its a Ma bell scope. It reaches out there and touches them.

I can only dream of scopes in that class...

Plenty of guidance so far so I wont add any. Just another thought. Ziess turrets are backwards from most other scope manufactures. No problem if you have all Ziess but if you have multiple rifles it becomes confusiong when you go back to your other Leuplod/NF.

I got shed of all my turret spinning Ziess for that paticular reason.
