Long Range Shooting Schools?

Has anyone been to any long range shooting schools or know anyone to take a guy under their wing and teach them? I really want to get into it and think it would be a blast to go this summer.

I had Gordy Gritters build me a 6.5x284 for long range shooting. He is a big time member of Varmint Hunters [beeep]. My range is at 600yds have not got to that level yet. I am sure Gordy can direct you if nit accomodate.

MTU / 29 Palms / 6 weeks March to April 1969 / M14 100-5oo yards. Combat shotgun, Colt 1911, S&W M37 and M76. We got one day on a "bloop gun" M79, real fun. Live rounds not these rubber rounds they shoot now. I served 1967 to 1992. I made 5 trips to 29 Palms. Best rifle range in the world. Got to see the new CAR15 that first trip.
 
Best school is read the internet for a few months. There's all kinds of forums... Long range hunting, benchrest competition, reloading forums, gunsmithing forums, F class and tactical rifle stuff, wanna be sniper forums, varmint hunting forums, olympic type marksmanship, ballistics, 22 rimfire smallbore competition, Army Sniper Manual, etc.

Start reading and read a lot. You'll quickly notice some stuff getting repeated over and over again. You'll be kinda lost at first but pretty soon it will start making sense. Even if you don't reload (which you NEED to do) you should learn about how and why reloading works. Or any other subject like wind drift, basic rifle gunsmithing, how scopes work, scope qualities, ballistic calculators, caliber options, cleaning, laser rangefinders, spotting scopes, etc.

Then practice what you learn with a 22 or 223 or whatever you have.

Educate yourself, for FREE, way better than a single course ever could ever educate you.

I have quite a good reloading set up and load alot of ammunition. I have been shooting and hunting for quite some time and definitely have the basics down. I shoot to 500 quite frequently. I just thought it would be fun to take a mini vacation and learn and shoot with a pro
 
What is it you want to learn? At most "schools" like Front Sight or whatever, you'll likely find it a "waste" of your time since they will start at ground zero and explain the basics of stuff like MOA, ballistics, positions, how to zero your rifle, making a dope chart, and stuff you already know.

The guy next to you will be experiencing that stuff for the first time ever and the class instructor is teaching to him, not you.

If you want to really learn, start competing in F-class or whatever you can. Learn it by doing it not by going to a class.

If you want to get on steel @ 1K, we have a guarantee, show you how to run top of the line equipment ie. LRF's, PDA's, Suppressed Precision Weapons, still working on organizing time slots, prices, etc..., I "was" in contact with Caylen Wojcik @ magpul about the LR class, about a course here in SD, not sure if its a go or not, will keep you posted.

Been there done that. Nuclear Artillery! Lends dignity to what would otherwise be a common brawl.

Id give F class a try, but idk if I have anything I could use to get started to test the waters. I don't know if im ready to drop a couple grand on a rifle that you cant hunt with!

cz 527 kevlar 204 6-24x50
84m kimber 204 6-24x42
winchester heavy varmint 220 swift 6-24x42
sako l579 220 swift 6-24-50
various 22-250's including 700's, sako, winchester
6mm remington limited editions sf with custom wood stock
various 243's
7 rum sendero

Is there a good set of rules and requirements around somewhere?

Rifles Only and a place in Florida are the 2 that I seem to notice more good comments about.
I didn't know that Skinney was getting into the training end of things, but I wouldn't hesitate to give him a call too.

Varmint Master, I've thought plenty about long range shooting and being that I've lived most of my life within 10 miles of where you are currently located I feel I can give you some hints without ever taking a formal range shot beyond 200 yards (hunting being an entirely different matter). Best to just give up on long range centerfire here in central Iowa. Longest range your liable to find to get any practice is 300 yards. Instead heavily consider going the rimfire route specifly .22lr. 200-300 yard shooting with a .22lr is just as impressive as longer ranges with centerfires, ammo is cheaper and ranges and private ground easier to find. A decent .22lr bolt gun or modified 10/22 and a decent 10x Mildot scope will teach you most of what you need for when/if you step up to centerfires.
