Lookin for a bird dog

WPG Wirehair pointing griffon. Never had to spend time trying to make a great dog out of him. We just have fun with him let him do his thing. My dogs are 99 percent family dog. 1 percent hunter. WPG's are great at home too.

Have you found your dog yet? I again strongly recommend a German Shorthair. Just about any hunting breed will suffice, but if you really want a good dog, study the breeding and find a good bloodline. Again, look at NAVHDA for breeding, and testing records.
Here is my male GSP that I took to the NAVHDA Invitational a couple of years back.
Doesn't get much prettier than this.

GSP all the way. I have two. One is 6 years old and weighs 40 pounds. The other is 3 years old and 65 pounds. So weight can vary a lot. Everyone says that they are crazy excitable, but I believe that is the environment and training. My dogs know they have to behave in the house, so they chill until that truck tail gate opens then its game on.

I have found Britts very intelegent and easy to train. ''The best way to train your bird dog'' By Bill Tarrant the Delmar Smith Method is a good book on upland training

I have hunted with good GSP and Own French and American Britts , My opinion Britt easier to train .I hunt with a very well trained 4 year old GSP fine dog. You will get more out of Britt in my experince the fist couple of years. I to like there Size.

No matter what breed it's about the training/time/environment. I have 2 GSPs and 1 lab and have hunted behind about every breed under the sun. Some bad, some good, some great and it all depends on the dog. Some require little to no training and others require a ton, just luck of the draw. Just had my 7 yr old GSP locked up with a great looking dog yesterday so hopefully have pups on the way soon.

Good luck

If you want a dog that is easy to train I would go with a lab. They are natural retrievers and very forgiving which really helps when you do not have much training experiance. Since you want a smaller dog I would reccomend looking in to getting an English cocker spaniel. Even though they are small they have no trouble retrieving a duck or pheasant. No matter what breed you decide to choose make sure you do some research. Watch the parents perform and make sure they have all of their health clearances.

I grew up hunting with a GSP. She passed away a few years ago but my Dad and I kept a male and a female of her litter. My male (Axel) is 7 this June and I wouldn't use another dog to hunt pheasants, chuckar, quail or grouse with. He is a 70 lb. lap dog that loves to hunt. When he was born within a month or two of having him at the house with the other pups he was pointing and retrieving like a champ! If you find a good bloodline they are definitely worth their weight in gold IMO. He retrieves well and holds a solid point until you get there to flush the bird. Best of luck in your search!

I have Hunted with and Trained Dogs for well over 50 years. I have four (4) Breeds that I like Best, and have owned dozens of them. They are Labs, Britts, Setters, and GSPointers. All of them are Great Dogs, and very good Family as well as Hunting Dogs.

BUT, if I had to have only one (1) DOG, it would be a GSP. They are the best all around dog of them all. This decision is based on many years of experience with all the Breeds. The GSP can handle all the Hunting needs you stated you want a dog for, and will do it very well and with Great Style if properly Trained. They also make Great House Pets as well.

Good Luck on your Search!!!!!!
