I'm looking to purchase a rifle this spring capable of hitting out to a 1000 yd. I was looking into the 308 or the 300 winchester Mag caliber. Any Ideas?
Yes, buy a 243 and forget about 30’s. All magnums will suck, especially those with a belt. Almost all 243’s are designed for deer hunters and have fast twist barrels (1-in-9 to 1-in-10) so they’ll stabilize long, high BC bullets. I’ve been using out of the box Remington 243’s for years with the Sierra 107 grain bullets with fantastic results. I use them for long range prairie dogs and F-Class matches.
Get a Remington Varminter in 243, have someone do a trigger job and bed it. Your scope will not be cheap but if you invest in good optics, they’ll last through several guns. I like the older (made in USA) Weaver T series.
The down side; I usually see very significant throat erosion before I hit 2,000 rounds. Whether anyone wants to admit it or not, the 243 is a “magnum” and quite a bit over-bore. Just because it doesn’t have one of those idiotic belts on it doesn’t mean it’s not way fast.
