looking for a 45 ACP load using unique

it'll be used in a Taurus Tracker 45ACP revolver with a 6.5 inch barrel.
I'm going to use the Hornady 200 gr XTP for the bullet and CCI #300 for the primer.

TIA,

Neither of my manuals (LEE or Hornady) have unique listed for the XTP bullet. I am getting ready (right after lunch) to load up some 200 XTP's with AA#5

I used 5.8 gr. Unique behind a 200 gr. lead SWC bullet in a Colt officer's and a full sized Kimber. Very mild target load but worked flawlessly in both.

Alliant's manual calls for 7.1 gr. w/200 gr. JHP bullet, Fed. 150 primer & 5" bbl @ 975 fps. Their target load (LSWC Bullet) shows 5.1 gr. @ 810 fps, same primer/barrel length.

Unique burns a bit dirty, but ya gotta clean 'em anyway /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif.

Regards,
hm

the bottle i have has "CLEANER BURNING" in big letters on the label...
/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif we'll see. I'm a bit anal about cleaning my guns anyway

I think I'm going to load some 200 gr LRN for an indoor range that doesn't allow any jacketed bullets, and see how "cleaner" it is. then look around for another powder for the XTP

I use AA#5 in my .45 ACP, it is just a little slower than Unique, but it seems to produce less leading with softer cast bullets and meters through the volumetric measure very accurately .... much more consistently than Unique, which is a flake powder.

I also used it in my .357 Magnum in preference to Unique for medium power target loads for the same reasons.

Been loading 45 ACP since 1975 and I use Bullseye in all my loads. 4.8 grs 230 grain cast and 5grs 230 grain jackets.

If I remember right I used 5.4 grs in 200 gr bullets but not sure I would have to check my records.

well i loaded up 5 rounds of 200 gr LFN over 5.0 gr of unique with a CCI LP primer.

took it out behind the house (gotta love living in the middle of nowhere) and shot it over my chrony, averaged 780 FPS out of my Taurus tracker. and there wasn't as much smoke and crap as I'd expected so they must have cleaned the stuff up like the label says. So I'm happy with that load, still going to look around for a good XTP load before doing anything with that bullet, so keep the ideas coming.

at least I'll get some trigger time on the new gun.

Seven grains of Unique ought to do ya. Used that ages ago with a 200 lead semi-wadcutter. Also ran up to 7.5 but that is pretty stiff. You might want to start at about 6.7 first and chrono that.

well, i went out and bought a pound of bullseye, much more consistent. pretty happy with 6.0 gr of bullseye over a 200 gr XTP. averaging 1100 FPS +/-30 over the chrony in a Taurus Tracker with 6.5 inch ported barrel.

What kind of primer do you use and how accurate is this load?

A +P load of AA#5 shoots extremely well in my Kimber 45 ACP.

Send me a PM and I'll tell you the load.

I can tell you one thing, at 45 ACP velocities, the 200g XTP does not expand at all unless you push the heck out of it at +P velocities.

It's best to consider this bullet a fmj, for all practical purposes.

I shot some large Javelina in Az with it, and it did not expand at all on any of them, but killed them...

6.0g of Unique is a great target load with this bullet.

I've been loading Unique in handguns for over XX years. I had a number in there, but it made me feel so old, I took it out.

Everything in my closet, 9mm, 38SP, 357M, 44SP, 44M, 45ACP, 45LC all get Unique. It may be a bit of a compromise in some situations, but if I wanted one can of powder on the shelf for my handgun loading, it would be Unique. Lead bullets, jacketed bullets, it does the job. Plus, the newer formula is cleaner.

Any Brand of standard primer seems to work just fine. Bullseye is easy to light off. Accuracy will match any factory round except usually the cast bullets are a hair more accurate then the jackets in some guns.

I am the same except I like Bullseye which is cheaper to load. Uninque provides a faster round in 45 than Bullseye though. Accuracy is about the same as well as metering.
