Looking for a good coyote rifle in 243 Win

Hi Everyone, new guy here.

I'm pretty set on a 243 Win for a calling rifle. I'd like a good shooting/feeding rifle. What are some of your reccomendations?

Right now I'm thinking possibly a Rem 700 SPS or a Ruger 77 MKII.

If you don't have a lot of money to spend i would go with the stevens modle 200. Otherwise the ruger 77 MKII is supposed to be pretty good.

give the tikka t3 rifle a look. i just bought the .223 and couldn't be happier. it's a shooter and light. my next rifle will be another tikka and will be a .243

good luck

If you can find one a Winchester mod 70 controlled feed, stainless, featherweight.

Accurate, Jeweled bolt, super smooth action, easily adjustable trigger.

Don't count out the Weatherby's. I shoot Weatherby Vanguard 30-06 (not a pelt hunter), and my neighbor shoots the same rifle in .243. They are outstanding for the money, I am sold on Weatherby for life (that dosent mean I wont still buy other brand rifles, I will always own atleast one Weatherby though).

Lots of "good" rifles out there. Brownings, Winchesters, Remingtons, Savages, Rugers and a host of custom guns. It would help us to make recommendations if you had some price range in mind.

Keep in mind that good optics can be as much as a rifle and needs to be included in your price estimate. Add in a good set of rings, a bipod and a decent sling, well...

I'm shooting two 243's now, A Ruger #1B with a 26 inch bbl and a Remington 700 VLS heavy 26 inch bbl. The Ruger is the lighter of the two and the one that most goes with me. The Remington heavy bbl is a joy to shoot and very accurate, but not much fun to pack to a coyote set.

Another problem with the 243 is there not fur friendly so hide damage can be a problem.

Nice thing about a 243 is it makes a good deer gun along with a dandy varmit rifle.

Give us some idea what you want to spend and exactly what use your going to put that new 243 to and folks here will be able to help you better.

That Ruger sure is purdy.

I'm thinking of spending less than $600 on the rifle. I'm going to probably spray paint the rifle for camo, and go out and shoot coyotes. I have a 204 Ruger for when I hunt for pelts, but we aren't getting much for the pelts around here.

I want to be able to shoot a coyote and put it down, and not have to be as concerned about shot placement as I am with the 204 Ruger.

That Rem VLS looks kind of heavy and bulky for me tp call coyotes with. But I bet it's a real shooter.

OH, BTW, I already have a nice scope for this future rifle.

Thanks

Folks I know are having good luck with the Savages and the accu-trigger is a good trigger. I'm a Remington fan so would suggest a 700, but there are lots of good rifles out there. You might also look at the Tikka's. They are an exceptionally accurate gun for the money.

Nice thing about the Savage's is with the purchase of a Barrel wrench, Barrel vice and a go gauge for the caliber you want you can switch calibers for minimal cost if that's something you wold like to do, i.e. you could have a 243 for varmits and a 338-08 for elk hunting on the same rifle. It takes about 15 minutes to change out barrels.

Don't forget the NEF's for calling rigs. I have two, one in 223 and in 243 and they both are tack drivers. Great little guns for carrying around in the field.

I have a rugar sst on black syn stock most rugars require trigger jobs and floating maybe evan bedding but they sure shoot well afterwords i think mine is doing .75 groups with handloads 90 gr nosler ballistic tips and varget powder. I dont really hunt for fur as you can tell.

This might sound stupid but, I have a remington 7600 in.243 that I'm thinking about turning into my yote gun. It is accurate(barell allready free floated), fast handling, clip fed, has iron sights which can be used in close quarters with see-thru rings, and fairly light compared to my bolt action guns. Just a thought. Wish you luck whatever you choose.

TMAS also dont forget about the CZ 550 American. I dont have one but a buddy of mine does. Very nice rifle in .243. Awesome trigger and not to heavy for a long walk. If single shot doesnt bother you then take a look at the Thompson Center Encore. I just bought one in .223 w/ a heavy barrel. Good little shooter. But I am a fan of sigle shots. Later

You won't find a more accurate gun outta the box than a Savage with the Accu-trigger.

If you want a super nice, light, easy handling gun, find yourself a Remington Model 7. It's a walking hunters best friend!

looked at the tikka, howa, rem, winchester, cz. narrowed it down to the tikka or the savage b/c i wanted outa the box accuracy. went the savage because i liked the looks of it better and have been EXTREMELY pleased. tikka's a pretty sweet to though.

If your going to paint it , get a Rem 700 SPS .
Remington has a very smooth action and they shoot well!

p.s Welcome to the best site for predator info!

I know I will get crucified for this but. I bought a Moss. 100 ATR in .243 @ walmart for a truck gun. ($244) I put a Simmions master series scope also @ walmart for ($49) and with my hand loads it shoots one hole groups @ 100. Very cost effective and reliable in my experience.

Just got a Mossberg ATR100 .243 for testing this season. I've got to agree that it is a nice solid rifle for the money. If it turns out to be as good as my .30-06 ATR then it will be an excellent choice for many. No frills but no big hangups either. Decent rifle.

Lots of good rifles out there. Most of them are good quality pieces. Dont forget about the Weatherby Vanguard series. They are pretty inexpensive, yet a quality gun. I have one in .30-06 I wont at a DU banquet and its been nothing but a solid performer. Walmart sells them for around $450. Have fun picking one out, the hunt is the fun part!
