looking for a new calling rifle and new Q - which make?

why didn't the 22 mag get more run on this thread? they are light as a gun relatively inexpensive to shoot and should hurt the pelts?

If I was not going to reload for this rifle I would go with the 223 just for the fact that it gives you so many options, all the ammo mfgs put out so many different loadings in a wide price range, Im a fan of all the cals mentioned its just that if I was limited to factory ammo.

pieeyed,,,,,,,,, No doubt the 223 could be loaded down,, but you and several others are over looking the fact that in the original post, muskieraider clearly said he doesn't reload...

I've never understood loading a caliber down and trying to turn it into something it's not anyway.
But,,, that's just my opinion, and the internet's full of em..

thanks all for the insight. Anything from a .204 and up is going to be more than i want in this rifle. Thats not to say i won't be adding one in the future! With some of the calling im doing right now, i can see a niche where a .17 fireball or a .22 hornet will fit the bill nicely.

Repete - yeah, i was looking at the cz's in the hornet but im not a big fan of the protruding magazine. I did come across a thread where a guy had the trigger guard and magazine were modified so it would fit more flush with the stock. That looked decent but he also had to do some bolt work to make the gun fit his scope. I'll have to look back and find that one to see if he listed which scope, Im not sure how much of a problem that really is with those guns. I have a browning a-bolt and like the 60 degree throw on that gun.

FishJ3 - savage produces a single shot in .22 hornet that i am considering http://www.savagearms.com/firearms/models/

manitoba monster - that sucks about those two guns, i looked over the thread about them. I would hate to have that happen to me, thats why im a little leary on it at this time, even though some others have gotten good ones.

TC Encore, 22 Hornet for now...209x50, 7mm08, 22-250 and other barrels could be had later after you see what a great little rifle it is and what it is capable of.

Well muskie,,, you're in luck..
I just happen to have a 527 with the mods you're talking about.
Actually,, it's exactly what you need but it AIN"T for sale.

LTRonthecheap.jpg

It started life as a 221FB. I had it rebarreled and chambered in 17FB by Pac-Nor.
Roy Bertaloto (rvbprecision) does the magazine conversion and James Calhoon trades bolt handles.
The bolt handle really has more to do with being able to use lower rings than the high ones that CZ supplies than it does with the scope manufacturer..
Here's a better pic that might help put it in perspective..
noname038.jpg

The rifle shot better than any factory rifle I've ever owned when it was a box-stock 221FB, so that's why I recomended it in the first place...
Doing all the mods turned it into the perfect (for me anyway) walking varminter.. But it was expencive and certainly not necessary where the accuracy was concerned..

The Browning Micro Hunter in 22Hornet is an excellent choice too. I bought my grandson one for his 12th birthday. They're extremly hard to find and pretty spendy,, but I've yet to hear of one that wasn't accurate... CZ's in 22Hornet will usually shoot right with em but they do have the magazine and bolt handle issues.. The Savage has that goofey trigger that I can't get used to, and the barrel's are pressed on rather than threaded in that model, which isn't very desirable IMO..
It's always something,, eah??

I'm also a big fan of Remington,, but certainly understand your scepticism reguarding the newer stuff.
Most of em are fine, although there does seem to be more and more QC issues these days..
It's a shame to,, because the 17FB really does fill the bill for your needs..

Sorry for the long post, but you seem to be thinking this thing through pretty well, and I thought I might be of some help..
Please keep us posted. I'm anxious to see how this story ends..

Repete - Your EVIL!

I have a savage .17 HMR and dont mind the trigger at all. Although the bolt feels a little sloppy and the safety can be a little sticky sometimes. I haven't really tried to figure whats going on with it yet, because when i use it, it works just fine. Do you have any idea why savage would press fit the barrel in that model versus threading in the other? I've noticed in some of your other posts you seem to chat with the various companies from time to time. ill have to look at the brownings a little more, thanks.

Hey,,, I just got a pm from another member that had the same delima as you. He ended up getting a Remington 799 in 22Hornet. It's the old MKX action that was imported by Interarms, and later Charles Dailey.
I've heard that they're pretty rough but I'll bet a good smith could slick up the trigger, and an evening with some JB's on the bolt, working it few hundred times while watching TV would probably cure alot of that.. (Heck CZ's are pretty rough at first too.) They're certainly priced well.. Might be another option for ya...

Hopefully he'll chime in and tell ya how his is doing...

+1

I have a CZ527 Hornet that is a sweetheart of a rifle. It drops 12 lb GH DRT @ 200 yards shooting the 35g V-Max. IMO it's not enough gun for NY coyotes but for the rest it works great. So does a .221 FB, and it would also be good for NY coyotes out to 200 yards, but that is really a reloader's cartridge.

I would listen to RePete. He's giving you some really good advice............even if he is evil.

Hunting Fox, Bobcat, and Racoon and saving Pelts would rule out calibers from 204 and up. I've been using a 17 Rem. since 1971 and the only Coyote runners I've had was from a poorly placed shot. When Rem. switched bullets years ago and quit using those 25gr. corelok type bullets, I had a lot of splashes. I switched to handloading and cured that problem. The 17FB will fit the bill perfectly for you.
