Hello,
I'm new at all of this, but i was hoping that one of u out there could send me some information on reloadin the sierra .223 55 gr. hp. Planning on using it mostly on gophers and rock chucks. Any loading data will be greatly appreciated.

I like Varget and BLC-(2) 25.0 - 27ish grains under a 55, but I use a v-max and a sierra sp. both powders are pretty safe on pressure, and the BLC-2 throws pretty consistently. I would work up several OCW loads

and go to the range. Take notes, be specific, weigh everything, it'll save you money in the end. I just finished working up a OCW charge for a buddy of mine in a .270 that shot 1 1/2 factory groups. The OCW for his rifle shot about a .5 moa at 100. Needless to say, he is well pleased. I am currently working on about three other rifles and just need another trip to the range to work it all out.

Thanks Dan Newberry,

I am not in to giving loads for the obvious safty reasons. I have had very good results with 55 g Sierra bullets using TAC, X-trem, and IMR 3031. These were near max loads per manual. I was using a Savage 110 1:9 twist, setting .020 off. These were doing -1.0" at 100. I need to keep working on it. I shot the chrony so have no idea of fps.

Well I found some very awesome loads with that bullet. Winchester cases, CCI 450 magnum primers, 25.2 grains of W748. This has been very very accurate with a 1in8 barrel.

But in the 1in9 Stevens the same primers, 25.5 grains of H335 and 55 grain Vmaxes have been also very accurate.

Brian, there are a couple of loads that seem to work in most 223's with a 55g bullet.

26.5g of 748 with the 55g bullet

I have killed a gazillion ground squirrels with this load. You can save your expensive Sierra's for the chucks and buy some of the cheap 55g Winchesters for the ground squirrels.

If you want to shoot the 50's, then bump up the load to 27.5g of 748 for amazing accuracy in most rifles. The cheap 50g Rem HP really do a great job on ground squirrels and are very accurate in most rifles.

If you want to get down to some serious tack driving with the 223 with blistering speed, then get some Lapua brass and some Vit N 133 for the 50's at speeds near 3600 and Vit N-135 for the 55's at speeds at 3500 fps. These Vit powders are simply amazing for both speed and accuracy in the 223's.
