i am looking at buying an antique winchester that is in like new condition. anyone know of appraisers in western colorado, or someone who can give me a ballpark off of photos?

Take it to a gunsmith or look on gunbroker.com. I have a Kelly blue book of gun vales someplace but you might be able to check a local library too. What gun is it?

This link might be a good place to start to really find out if its a true collector grade Winchester and what its value might be.

The people at this link also might be able to help. They are in Houston, Texas, but they deal with a lot of old Winchesters.

Is there anyone in the Denver area who deals with old Winchesters? Maybe even fire a question with pictures to the William F. Cody Museum in Cody, Wyoming.

The last place I'd look for advice on a true cost for a potential collector would be on an internet sight loaded with all kinds of experts. You might find in reality its a POS by their standards and then they'll send you a PM asking where they can buy it. Someone who regularly deals with collectibles will give you an honest appraisal.

i am not asking anyone on here to give me a value. i am asking if anyone on here KNOWS a good appraiser in western colorado.

it has a cody letter and is correct. it is not an average specimen. it is a custom order made in the 1800's that is in unbelievable condition. i have already contacted the winchester arms collectors association, and am working from that angle as well. but once i get a ball park off of photos, i would like to get an in person value.
it is going to take someone who knows rare winchesters to place a correct value range.

As a collector, I couldn't agree more with your last statement.

I was responding more to the request for pictures, which if not provided as requested, might lead to further issues.

Again, I would look to the Collectors Association for leads on selected and recognized appraisers who might be near you. The link I provided in Houston is a good appraiser, but I realize they are not close to you. However, with all the information you have about the rifle along with photos, they might be able to be "ball park" without too much trouble.

Here is one in Fairbury, NE, not too far from you possibly, depending on where in western Colorado you are located.

This link is another good appraiser of old Winchesters who might be able to help from documents and pictures.

They are in New Orleans, but the good part is they are located on Royale Street just one block off Bourbon Street. You could "Laissez les bons temps rouler", and get an appraisal, too.

i found someone who has knowledge of RARE winchesters. from a couple of photos he could tell it was a refinish. i suspected it might be, but now i know. it went from being potentially worth $15k to $20k to $2500.

beautiful rifle and i still want it.

it is an 1894 made in 1895 in 30 wcf. half round half octagon barrel, half magazine, takedown, fancy wood, pistol grip, shotgun butt, rubber butt plat, and checkering.

looks too good to be true.

Too bad it has been refinished, but I'm glad you got the answer you needed. There are a lot of those out there today.

Still, it sounds like you might have found a very nice specimen to keep at a very reasonable price. Good luck.
