recently bought myself a new CZ527 Varmint in 223. I really love the mini Mauser actions, love my 527 American (sporter), and I love the fact that the 527 is magazine fed. Shopping online I managed to find a vendor that offered them about $100-150 cheaper than any of the local shops would order one in for me. SO I bit the bullet and got one headed my way.
I don't necessarily care for the magazine that sticks out the bottom and the "ears" on the floor plate assembly. So I cut them off and draw filed them out. The floorplate assembly will be heading off to get a hot salt blue once I get my other one taken care of. I was planning on modifying the mags down to flush fit (3rounds) but now CZusa is offering for the same price as a stock 5rd mag.
Before I ever fired a shot I also went to the extent of pillar bedding the action. After a couple days of cure time, I will be glassing the recoil lug as well. Yesterday I gave it a full trigger job. I personally don't care for the single set mechanism in the CZ triggers, so I disable them. Next the sear surfaces get stoned to a nice clean smooth surface. After stoning the trigger and maximizing the three screw adjustment the best pull I could achieve was around 2.5lbs.
At that time I pulled the assembly apart, and used a bit of valve lapping compound on the sear surfaces to ensure the sear and trigger had maximum engagement. I also removed the trigger spring and removed one full coil. After re-assembly, there was no spring tension for the sear to pickup the firing pin. I again pulled the trigger spring and slightly stretched it to increase tension when the sear was "unloaded". After final assembly, I was able to reduce my factory trigger pull down to a glass breaking crisp 14oz. Perfect for a bench/doggin gun.
So today was the first trip to the range. I don't personally believe in extensive barrel break-in's. The first ten-fifteen shots or so were pretty scattered holding groups about 2". But it was apparent that the bore was smoothing out/fouling in after about twenty rounds. From left to right: 50g Barnes Varmint Grenade over Varget handloads, Federal GMM 69g Matchking, Federal 55g Nosler Ballistic tip. All groups were fired from a rest and bag at 100 yds. Scope is a Weaver T36 with 1/8moa target dot.
