Love my new CZ 527!

recently bought myself a new CZ527 Varmint in 223. I really love the mini Mauser actions, love my 527 American (sporter), and I love the fact that the 527 is magazine fed. Shopping online I managed to find a vendor that offered them about $100-150 cheaper than any of the local shops would order one in for me. SO I bit the bullet and got one headed my way.

I don't necessarily care for the magazine that sticks out the bottom and the "ears" on the floor plate assembly. So I cut them off and draw filed them out. The floorplate assembly will be heading off to get a hot salt blue once I get my other one taken care of. I was planning on modifying the mags down to flush fit (3rounds) but now CZusa is offering for the same price as a stock 5rd mag.

Before I ever fired a shot I also went to the extent of pillar bedding the action. After a couple days of cure time, I will be glassing the recoil lug as well. Yesterday I gave it a full trigger job. I personally don't care for the single set mechanism in the CZ triggers, so I disable them. Next the sear surfaces get stoned to a nice clean smooth surface. After stoning the trigger and maximizing the three screw adjustment the best pull I could achieve was around 2.5lbs.

At that time I pulled the assembly apart, and used a bit of valve lapping compound on the sear surfaces to ensure the sear and trigger had maximum engagement. I also removed the trigger spring and removed one full coil. After re-assembly, there was no spring tension for the sear to pickup the firing pin. I again pulled the trigger spring and slightly stretched it to increase tension when the sear was "unloaded". After final assembly, I was able to reduce my factory trigger pull down to a glass breaking crisp 14oz. Perfect for a bench/doggin gun.

So today was the first trip to the range. I don't personally believe in extensive barrel break-in's. The first ten-fifteen shots or so were pretty scattered holding groups about 2". But it was apparent that the bore was smoothing out/fouling in after about twenty rounds. From left to right: 50g Barnes Varmint Grenade over Varget handloads, Federal GMM 69g Matchking, Federal 55g Nosler Ballistic tip. All groups were fired from a rest and bag at 100 yds. Scope is a Weaver T36 with 1/8moa target dot.

Like you, I didn't like the set trigger on my 527 Varmint (.204)...I adjusted the set part out and lightened the pull... Maybe I need to do what you did to bring it down even lighter...I'm hesitant to do so since I also hunt with it, wearing lightweight gloves...

OldTurtle, I could not get under 2.5 without taking some spring. I tried a spring with a light spring rate and I just didn't feel safe with. By cutting one coil and a slight stretch it came down to 14oz with the poundage screw all the way out. It now could be tensioned a bit higher. I would not take that assembly any lighter, because I started seeing jumps in the weight needed to trip the sear, it just became inconsistent.

Gotta say the first groups were alright. Not too bad considering I had drank about a pot and 1/2 of coffee and it was about 20deg (and I still haven't made the adjustment to winter).

I think I will probably leave mine the way it is, other than maybe polishing it a little.. Mine, like yours, seems to shoot better with a slightly dirty barrel... I had to free float the barrel and bed the action to get it close to what I like and the trigger is the only improvement that I think needs to be done...

As far as Winter,,, I'm getting ready to relocate to FL for three months.. Maybe I can find some Coyotes down there...I don't want to get acclimated...

RJMAcres just advised me that he's having ice come into Southern MO...and down in those hills, power can go out and roads get treacherous...

Tough to tell if it was fouling in, or breaking in. After I scrub it hard and get it back to the range I will know more.

I think I could handle a FL winter, but even a MO winter is an upgrade from here. 19deg right now, lakes are freezing up, and I am about to barricade myself in my reloading room.

The only real plus to being in MN in the Winter is that all those "Pint Sucking" Mosquitoes are usually gone for the season...I've never been able to get into ice fishing...The thought of all that cold water under me gives me the willies...But there is some beautiful country up there...

Rifle Basix has a pretty decent aftermarket replacement for the 527. I think the adjustment range is 12 ounces to 3 pounds and it uses the factory safety.

Why would I pay to buy parts for an assembly that can already be adjusted down that far? I could co lighter than 14oz by taking another 1/2 coil and stretching the spring. And I'm out a total of 15 minuts, lol.

Anyways love my CZ's. A whole lot of accuracy potential right out the box. And since it seems to like the 69's it might get a field trip to an F-class match just for the heck of it!

Nice looking rig there.Originally Posted By: Bernie P.My .223 American-

FWIW I thought the mag might be a nuisance but it's really not.
