I'm for it. If you shots are mostly under 100 you might never get off 1x. I'd look for one with the least cluttered reticle. I use 1-4's and 1.5-6's on almost all my hunting rifles.

If you're looking to purchase a 1-8x24 scope a good one is the Burris 1-8x24 XTR II - a bit heavy but it's a mighty fine scope - I have one on my AR. If the Burris XTR is on the expensive side for you, the Vortex 1-8X24 is less expensive and I've read good reports on it, for whatever that's worth.

For coyotes at 100 yards or less, I would think the Aim Point Micro with 2moa red dot would be the ticket, as it's extremely light, fast on target and can be shot as accurate as any 2X scope at 100 yards.

I have several Leupold 2.5-8x VX3's. With the Boone and Crockett reticle it works great and is not super expensive. I am very intrigued by the new Nightforce 1-8. I haven't seen prices on it but my guess is 1500 and that is probably very optimistic on my part.

I agree with AWS. Most use too much power. I bought a Vortex 1-8. Don't remember the dot size and haven't had the chance to use it but what I've looked through it appears to be a good scope. It is also illuminated but that is neither a deal maker or breaker to me.. 2-7 or 3-9 would be plenty of scope especially at 100 or less. Where I get to hunt now 150 yds is about it until I can find some more ground for longer shots.

After being impressed with an Athlon spotting scope that I purchased this summer, I was planning on getting their 1-6x24 to put on my AR calling carbine.
The tax man, and Christmas shopping severely cut into my scope fund, so I bought a Cabela's store brand 1-6x24.

It should be here today or tuesday, and I will give my impressions. Anyone have any experience with their store brand scopes?

Mine was delivered at dusk today. First impression is that it is better than I expected.
I have had issues with cheap scopes not being able to focus the reticle and target both due to my glasses, not an issue with this scope. It was focused out of the box.
The lowest illumination for the reticle was perfect for low light inside the house, with only one light lit on the other end of the house.
I slipped it in my pocket when I walked the dogs after the full moon was up, and looking through the scope on 1x is very slightly darker than with bare eyes. I was still able to find point of aim on a deer in my neighbors front yard about 75yds away using the red reticle on 1 and both eyes open.

The scope came with an AR mount which I didn't notice in the ad, so now I have an extra. I should get it mounted on my carbine using my Leupold mount tomorrow.
Lit reticle clicks are mushy, but 1/2" clicks on the turrets are pretty crisp.

The scope mount is a bit less robust than the Leupold, but I will keep it around just in case.
I still think it's a lot of scope for the money. I should get to the range this weekend to sight it in and probably do a "box test".

^^^@ 4eyes i say its on par with the strike eagle.i choose the XP8 because of the half moa center dot, free caps, one piece mount, fast lever cat tail, cant go wrong.all for right under $400.i will put to the test this weekend for a contest.do a in the field review after. pics to come this weekend.

Contest was slow but the XP8 did its job very well crystal clear. and i loved the retical on this scope.
