Lubing the neck

I my self do not use a brush. I use RCBS case lube 2. I take a q-tip pull off some of the cotton apply lube to q-tip and apply to mouth of case making sure that I do not get any on the outside of the neck.

I have used a nylon bore brush before but didn't seem to do a great job.

After I am done prepping the cases I wash all cases in lacquer thinner and toss it tumbler for 15 Min. then blow out grit with compressed air.

i use imperial case lube with the small bb's you stick the neck in and it does both sides and does not need to be wiped off

I use a 35mm film cannister (any small container will work), pour about an inch of lead shot (#7 works well) into it, and add powdered graphite (Lock-Eze) and shake it up.

I just twist each case neck down into it on the way to the shellholder. I'm paranoid about putting anything oil based into my cases.

About every 1000 cases or so, I add a little more graphite.

i use a kit made by NECO...canister filled with steel shot&moly powder...insert case neck, twirl, tap to insure steel shot falls out (!),wipe off excess from outer neck...moly won't contaminate powder...

I have never lubed any case neck in 40 yrs of making rounds.
Now I do use spray lube on my cases though, but never did lube the inside the neck on purpose for any reason.

BlueDuck:

Posters here omitted that Imperial Dry Neck Lube is a very fine powdered graphite...use it after you have used Imperial Sizing Die Wax on the outside of the case.

Just dip the cap of the dry neck lube in the dry lube base can base container so there is a little pile...about 1/2 thimble full in the cap...and then dip the case necks in the small amount in the cap...you dip the neck in to only 1/2 of the case neck length, as that is enough to coat the inside of the case neck mouth. You DON'T need to dip the case even to the base of the case neck, 1/2 of the neck length is enough.

Now you are ready to re-size the case(s) in your re-sizing die.

(When done with all the [now lubed] cases, pour the capful of dry lube back into its base container with all the rest, and cap it up.)

Still on the same can w/ 95% contents after 25+ years of use. It is great stuff, doesn't leave any significant residue on the die expander ball as do some of the liquid products.

I have never wiped any residual(?) dry lube out of the inside of the case necks after re-sizing, instead I pour powder and seat bullets with little ill effects (if any) on accuracy. The powder pouring process likely helps remove any residual dry neck lube left on the inside of the case neck as my bullets are tight.

But, maybe I should try to clean the inside of case necks prior to powder and bullet seating sometimes for kicks....

P.S. With lubing the outside of the case, just coat the Imperial sizing Die Wax on the case body below the shoulder using a swipe on your thumb and forefinger...that is enough for 2 cases, then another swipe for 2 more cases.

I think you'll be wasting your time. That expander ball scours them out pretty thoroughly.
I never heard of Imperial dry neck lube until this post. Since their sizing wax works so well for me, I'm going to give the neck lube a try, too.

All:

You will find the dry lube allows the expander ball to be incredibly smooth/efficient compared to no lube at all, on Forster dies it seems the expander ball is missing!

(A testament to smoothness of the Forstner die parts in general)

Use of dry lube will result in much less 'work hardening' i.e. fatigue of the case neck brass, and likely prolong case reload life....(no, I can't PROVE it...and I'm NOT a salesman for Imperial....)

Lurker. your post about the lead shot and graphite was the one I was referring to earlier. I thought you were using the Imperial dry lube in the shot, but my memory fails me occasionally.

No, Lock-Eze powdered graphite. It works very well, the expander ball gets a coat on it and it glides right through.
As far as worrying about getting graphite in the case, it won't hurt anything. Smokless powder uses graphite as a coating already, a tiny bit more won't make any difference.
In the future, though, I'm going to try the Imperial and see what I think.

I have seen a little film canister looking thing in sinclairs website. It has ceramic media with the dry lube in it and u just dip the neck in and its good to go. I have never used it but have a friend who swears by it.
