Lumens

I'm looking into buying a new hand held light for this season, and I really like the surefire lights. My problem is, all them are rated in lumens? I'd like to know what a lumen is compared to candlepower. The model I like is 100 lumens, and I don't have a clue how bright this is. For example, how does a 100 lumen light compare to a 3 or 4 d-cell mag light? any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance

Sorry man, I don't have a clue what lumens means. You're talking modern day BS most folks never heard of. Using lights at night is not a rocket science. I don't know what to tell you except good luck.

Now I understand why tactical lights are measured in lumens. It makes sense. Police want to know how far a light will throw the beam. That can be kind of misleading though. Sure, it would be nice to throw a light beam 50yds. But if that beam is only covering a 2" area, what's the use?

that's kinda what I was thinking. I need another light besides the spotlights that I know will hold up to being dropped and banged around. surefire is supposed to make good lights. I'm pretty sure that's what I will go with. Lumens just had me confused for a little while!

good hunting

DSTCAT, My son is going to be a LEO, and after questioning LEO's and comparing Surefire to Stingers, I got him a Surefire Centurion that puts out 105 lumen. It is smaller and more compact than a Stinger. It does pay to shop around. I found this one for $90 in OKC. Jim

I've got both a surefire and an Ultra stinger. The ultra is much brighter and shines a lot further. It is a bit bigger, but throws a good beam out to 100 yards. Using a red lens on them cuts down the distance , and I can still pick up eyes out beyond 100 yds with the stinger.
