Lunch when hunting?

Ok, so it's irrelevent to hunting. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
But my recent hunting outing with "deadhorse" got me to wondering. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Who takes along a "sack lunch"? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif
Who, when handy, goes to town for lunch?
/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

Since we [deadhorse & I] were hunting only a few miles from town, & it was raining, we stopped at a quaint local cafe to eat. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I admit, that since I usually hunt alone, I rarely eat lunch while hunting. {This has more to do with a finiky body system than anything else.} /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif
Prior to the last couple of years, I would take a "sack lunch". That way I could eat a few bites throughout the day, while driving from stand to stand.

What do you do? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

Will,
Even in Saline County, you're never too far from civilization!

Here around Russell, we usually just jet back to town--hard to stomach a bologna sandwich when a Sonic chili dog is only 10 minutes away! Just makes my partner and I tough to be around the rest of the day! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

BTW, you might consider treating Tony Tebbe to some great public hunting a bit farther West--we checked out the Wilson Wildlife area around the lake yesterday. Has some awesome calling potential!

Ah, that's part of the problem, Tim. I don't hunt close to Salina. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif
Admittedly, Tescott, Minneapolis are within a few minutes drive when in Ottawa county. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
When the time comes, I'll let Tony chose if he wants to travel west. I agree there's a lot of good hunting out around that area. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif
I actually had planned on hunting this weekend, WIHA in Lincoln, Osborne, Mitchell & Jewell counties. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif
But all this rain the past few days foiled that idea. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/angry-smiley-055.gif

Mike and I typically pack for a full days worth of eating. Lunch meat, salame, crackers, pringles, snickers, soda's, water, drink mix. You name and you will not go hungry on a trip with eiter of us. Lance was treated to the roadside gourmet the last time out and he ever brought along some Manifold HotLinks to throw in the mix..

We have it down to a science now a days.

If there is a local spot to eat, we will, but typically there isn't.

If you don't take a lunch you'll be putting all those ice cube making machines out of business and if you don't have a cooler for all that ice, how are you going to keep all those Gator bottles and after hunting beers from rolling around in the back of the truck. Bill has a mean tortilla, lunch meat and hot pickled vegtable burro recipe. I've fed more than a few PMer's a Globe this meal. Some took their first bite in fear, before long I was afraid there wouldn't be enough. .... that's a ly, but they all seemed to like it. Lunch is deffinately a must for a good hunt ...... a great hunt ends with a nice steak on my portable BBQ grill, cold canned peaches, a fresh salad and a cold beer ...... mmmmmmmm, man do I ever want to go huntin' right now!

Yep, depends on how far away from town we'll be, and we can get pretty far. Town for sure if we're anywhere close. I'm not a great fixer of lunches so just grab whatever is portable as I head out the door: fruit, crackers, bread, cheese, venison sausage. Sometimes forget lunch and come in pretty ravenous at the end of the day. My wife makes me a real lunch when she knows I'm going hunting all day.

I was calling up the Alaska Highway recently and discovered the fabulous homemade soup and fresh homebaked bread at Toad River. I managed to time my calling and travel to have lunch there a couple of times. This risks shifting the thread toward a listing of good places for lunch, but if you're heading up the AlCan, Toad River is worth a stop. Great cinnamon rolls if you catch them right out of the oven.

Sometimes when my son is hunting with me, we'll fire up my pocket sized backpack stove and heat stew and make a hot drink on the tailgate. Quick and minimal.

I eat pretty much from wake up to lay down and never gain weight. 56 years old and weigh within 5 lbs of the day I got out of High School, still wear the same size Levis and Tshirts.
5'10" and 195 lbs.
So the whole "lunch"thing is a mystrey to me. I favor "eat all ya can every chance ya get".

Yep, "Manifold Beans" were pretty good in the winter time when I was on the line crew out in the boonies. Sure beat a cold meat sandwich. Them big old line trucks, you could almost cook a 5 course meal on just the exhaust manifold.

Yep always bring a lunch or snacks along with lots of water, green tea to drink.

Yes I know about the salami snacks, pretty good stuff. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Our grill went missing from the deer lease and we're 45 minutes from the nearest gas station. We couldn't let the meat go to waste, so we scrounged up some chicken wire for a grill and cooked the hamburgers on dead mesquite. Those were the best burgers ever. Even made the Coors Light taste pretty good.

We eat raw coyote livers for lunch when we are hunting. It gives my partners more motivation not to miss. In our world it's miss and go hungry.

If I dont pack a lunch then I go hungry and that aint happening. The "nearest town" where I live is a looooong ways away. Chances are there is only a post office there anyway. 75 miles of which 40 of it is on a dirt road is "close to town" for me. Lunch doesnt have to be sandwiches either. A grocery bag full of jerky, chips, pop tarts, summer sausage, cheese & crackers is all I need.
