M1A - wood or fiberglass?

I'm getting an M1A. Does anybody think it matters whether I get the walnut stock or fiberglass?

Thanks in advance.

I have always shot the walnut stocks and think they look better but the synthetic will be lighter. If you ever have it worked on, the wood would be the better option unless you went to a custom stock such as McMillan.

I had a walnut stock on a NM split once. SA replaced it including rebedding etc. no charge. It could have been just a fluke. I do know that back when the service teams were shooting M1As, they all went to fiberglass stocks.

Are you getting the double lugged receiver?

The difference is major.

The original design had just one small lug on each side of the receiver. The double lug has 2 recoil lugs on each side. Because of the small area absorbing the recoil, the old design was only good for 1000-1500 rounds before it needed rebedding. The double lug design is good for probably 3 times that.

In a match configuration, the double lug is worth twice the price of a single.

Jack,

Thanks for the info. I found the same set of facts from another source. The difference is from a qualitative standpoint is plain to me.

I'm getting a Standard or maybe a Loaded. Based upon info on Springfield's web site, I believe that neither of those will have the lug configuration you mentioned. I haven't been able to go back to the store to look at that aspect.

This begs the question: For hunting and general recreational use, will it matter to me?

Thanks.

FWIW I have no personal experience with either M1A stock material. I have heard multiple complaints (1st person) about the synthetic stock.

Ask the guys at www.battlerifles.com (this is where I remember hearing the negative remarks).

If it were me I'd get the wood furniture. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Gotta love the M1A!

Probably not.
If you get the standard one, it is not bedded to start with and you will probably not be shooting that many rounds.

I looked at the very rifle I expect to get tonight. I see exactly what you're talking about. I doubt the deer and Spring-time 'yotes will care how many lugs the receiver has.

Thanks for the info.
