M1A

Anyone done any hunting with a Springfield M1A or M-14? I'm considering a custom build on one and was wondering what you all thought of it as a deer/elk rifle. I know with an aftermarket stock and optics it can be a bit heavy to lug around, but I figure if the could carry it through the jungles of vietnam to hunt Charlie, I could probably handle carrying it around the sagebrush of Eastern Washington.

I love my M1A-Loaded, the Muleys don't love it much.
This is my first hunt with it, it is wearing a Sightron 4x16 now.

This one is my main deer rifle these days. Yes they're a bit on the heavy side but so are most good long range guns. This one is a National Match model with a Zeiss 4.5x14 on top. Killed deer this year at 75, 530, and 600yds. Also got coyotes at 400 and 150yds while deer hunting over some beanfields. Gotta love it.

who makes the scope mount that goes over the action like that? Very beautiful rifles gents. I see you had to raise your cheek weld a little for proper alignment with the glass.

my brother has one, very nice and accurate rifle, and a blast to shoot. His I believe is the standard.

He has taken a few deer with it, and Im sure with the right loads it would be a pretty decent elk rifle.

It is pretty heavy, he put a synthetic stock on it years ago, little lighter, but he did it so his wood furniture didnt get messed up.

I am saving up for the scout model, just like the little shorter barrel, i think the socom is cool, but I think that short barrel and break would be just too dang loud.

Good luck

I got a good deal on a match rifle several years ago and loved it.I would get it out of the safe just to look at.Then I decided to shoot it.4"@100.I worked with the gun and loads.tried gold medel match,no help.Sold it to a shooting buddy that shoots M1 in comp.He said he thought he could make it shoot,no luck.He sold it to one of his buddies,no luck.Last time I saw it itwas in a shop for sale again.I guess thats why it was such a good deal to start with.I still love that kind of rifle and would like to have another someday but that one just had something wrong with it that several people who know a little about rifles could not find.Between all of us and what we spent trying to get it to shoot, guess it was not such a good deal after all.

That's a Basset Machine mount, low picatinny, and Sig. Z rings on mine. Tried a Springfield gen.3 mount first with the same scope and couldn't keep it zeroed. The basset has worked great. It mounts with one bolt and supposedly goes on and off without losing zero, although I haven't tried it. This rifle consistantly shoots .75-1.25 MOA.Usually 1 or less with match grade ammo. I think I got lucky as I've heard that most aren't that good, and are hard to keep doing that good. Yeah, you about need a cheek pad on the stock when using a scope, at least I do.

The only issue I have with the M1A as a hunting gun is the weight. But, that being said, if you practice shooting it, esp using a sling, it will make a fine hunting rifle.

If you scope it you will need a riser to get a good cheek weld. There are several good scope mounts out there. Look for a 3 point if you want to scope it. I use an Israeli single point mount because my M1A is a former Israeli sniper and it has the correct stock and Nimrod scope.

I know for a fact that the Montana Fish and Game have some M14's that they use to dispatch injured animals with. They need to dispatch animals up to bear and moose size and the 308 out of the M1A does just fine.

Well, we'll see what happens and what my wallet looks like this time next year. I'm either going all out with the M1A and tricking it out, or getting a heavy barrelled savage model 10 to customize. The wife's gonna be real mad, and I'll be in the doghouse for awhile, but at least I'll be happy right?
