M91 Mosin Nagant

What kind of accuracy are you guys getting out of your Mosin Nagant M91's? I am thinking about picking one up and turning it into a 150 yards or less gun for deer.

Never shot one from a bench but general consensus is minute of deer out to a couple hundred yards. It'd be fine for your use. But....... I feel that money is best spent elsewhere unless you just absolutely can't afford anything else. By the time you spend any money on upgrades for em you could of got something better.

I can bend the bolt handle with a torch, and do the stock work myself. Otherwise I dont have much else I'm concerned about. I just want it cause its a piece of history I can tinker with a little and still put meat in the freezer.

If you reload for it you can get sub moa. I have an M44 with a 17" barrel that shoots VERY well out to 500 yds. I plan on getting a longer barrel for it so I can squeeze a few more FPS.

I put over 500 rounds thru one but never on paper. It was an ammo blaster and I didn't care what it shot so it wasn't worth the effort to put it on paper. It had an over all feeling of a cheap rifle, terrible trigger and a bolt lift that at times almost needed a rubber mallet to open it. I eventually tired of it and run it down the road.

If your looking for a nice shooting accurate surplus rifle go find a Swiss K31. It's got a straight pull bolt, detachable mag and a really nice 2 stage trigger. 7.5 x55 Swiss. Grafs has brass, redding has dies, either of mine will do 5 shots under 3" at 100 yards with the original open sights. There a bit nicer piece of history if your into that.

I have shot deer with my Mosin and I think it's s cool gun and like plinking with it, I am going to tinker with mine as well. But I agree, if you want a real shooter with history built in, those K31's are the ticket.

I used the Rock Solid Ind mount and bent bolt. It's also got a Timney trigger, lightened cocking piece and shortened lock length. And I also built the stock w adjustable cheek rest.

Hellion , one last question . How many rounds can you fire with your setup before the accuracy starts to decline ? I have a 91/59 carbine with an excellent bore that I want to play with mounting a scope and bolt handle . All I have ever shot is surplus ammo with original sights and not accurate at all. I have access to some brass so I could reload in the future .

I dont know as far as round count/barrel life. A surplus barrel can be had for next to nothing and there are a few places that make replacements. I'm close to 300 reloads through mine w factory barrel which I hand lapped when I got it. It still shoots outstanding groups for a junky ol' Mosin.

From what I have read, they were meant to be fired with the bayonet extended or attached. When firing without it they shoot like crap. Cork bedding the chamber and floating the barrel can make huge improvements. Mine was FAR from perfect before I molested the [beeep] out of it.

Hellion , What I was asking was how many rounds can you fire in a short period of time during a shooting session before the barrel heats enough to start loosing accuracy assuming you are using an original barrel with what appears to be a muzzle break .

I've loaded and shot 25-50rds in a sitting and have not noticed huge changes, shooting 5-10rd strings and then letting it cool. The reason I started loading for it was because I had so much deviation in factory ammo. Factory ammo is not bad out to 300yds but past that the load inconsistencies really start to show in elevation. I was shooting PPU 182gr which I found to be the best for it. Still nothing like the 174gr SMK over 43.8gr of H4895 .010 from the lands w CCI200 primers and no crimp.

Thanks for the information . It backs up what a local guy had told me . I am in the mood for a new project to keep me busy for the rest of this Michigan winter.

I keep hearing about how loud they are, true??
They say it will give a splitting headache if you shoot once without hearing protection. Some guys use earplugs and ear muffs over top..... were these people over exaggerating this??

i got a 91/30 all original except the scout mount i have on it, and i refinished the stock. ive hit paper out to 400 yards with it, but ive shot others that couldnt hit the broad side of a barn so i guess it really depends, i may have been lucky with the one i bought... overall [beeep] for around 100 bucks you cant beat it, itll go through [beeep] and back with you and the iron sights are dead-on and easy to adjust if not. id say go for it, nothing beats taking down an animal with a peice of wwII history. as for them being loud, while they do sound like a cannon going off a cheap pair of ear plugs have worked fine for the 1,000+ rounds ive put through it, also it seems alot louder when your not the one shooting it, dont ask me why.
