Mad mule deer chase coyote

One of the funniest things I've ever seen while I was hunting happened today. I was on my fourth stand and my e caller shut down(low batt) after about 5 seconds of screaming rabbit so I was reaching inside my coat for my mouth calls when a coyote ran into the hayfield about 250 yards below me followed closely by about a dozen mule deer does that seemed a little upset. Once in awhile a doe would break formation and charge after the dog to within a couple of yards then dodge back into the group of does then another doe would do the same thing. This went on for a couple of minutes and covered a couple acres of ground. The coyote was cutting around in short loops and looking up the hill where he knew his next meal was. Another doe would charge and he would dodge around and move a little closer to that rabbit he had heard up on the hill. When he got about 75 yards from the gang of mad mule deer they quit charging him so he headed up the hill toward me. At about 150 yards he stopped to look b

ack at the deer and I ended his embarassment with a 35 berger.

When I was in Montana hunting coyotes this year I watched 4 doe antelope chase a coyote for about 1/4 mile. It was like a slow speed chase though they just loped along behind the coyote and made him keep on moving.

I had a coyote on the way in to me, when a big mulie doe spotted him and chased him back over the hill... sometimes it doesn't pay to get out of bed.....

I've seen whitetail does run coyotes out of the county before but that was during fawning season. I figure this coyote just ran by slightly up wind of where the deer were bedded and they were upset because he disturbed their nap.
But what amazed me was that with only a few seconds of calling the coyote was determined to get to that rabbit. Just goes to show most of us call too much. I laughed my butt off when it was over but it was about 20 degrees with a 30 mph wind when I took the shot so I was pretty much frozen solid. My hunting buddy was sitting about 20 yards away and never heard the caller. He said when he stood up and looked he thought I had shot a deer.
