Made in the USA : Spoiled brats

My mom e-mailed this to me:

The other day I was reading Newsweek magazine and came across some poll data I found rather hard to believe. It must be true given the source, right?

The Newsweek poll alleges that 67 percent of Americans are unhappy with the direction the country is headed and 69 percent of the country is unhappy with the performance of the president. In essence 2/3s of the citizenry just aren't happy and want a change.

So being the knuckle dragger I am, I starting thinking, ''What we are so unhappy about?''

Is it that we have electricity and running water 24 hours a day, 7 days a week? Is our unhappiness the result of having air conditioning in the summer and heating in the winter? Could it be that 95.4 percent of these unhappy folks have a job? Maybe it is the ability to walk into a grocery store at any time and see more food in moments than Darfur has seen in the last year?

Maybe it is the ability to drive from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean without having to present identification papers as we move through each state? Or possibly the hundreds of clean and safe motels we would find along the way that can provide temporary shelter? I guess having thousands of restaurants with varying cuisine from around the world is just not good enough. Or could it be that when we wreck our car, emergency workers show up and provide services to help all involved. Whether you are rich or poor they treat your wounds and even, if necessary, send a helicopter to take you to the hospital.

Perhaps you are one of the 70 percent of Americans who own a home. You may be upset with knowing that in the unfortunate case of a fire, a group of trained firefighters will appear in moments and use top notch equipment to extinguish the flames thus saving you, your family and your belongings. Or if, while at home watching one of your many flat screen TVs, a burglar or prowler intrudes , an officer equipped with a gun and a bullet-proof vest will come to defend you and your family against attack or loss. This all in the backdrop of a neighborhood free of bombs or militias raping and pillaging the residents. Neighborhoods where 90 percent of teenagers own cell phones and computers.

How about the complete religious, social and political freedoms we enjoy that are the envy of everyone in the world? Maybe that is what has 67 percent of you folks unhappy.

Fact is, we are the largest group of ungrateful, spoiled brats the world has ever seen. No wonder the world loves the U.S. , yet has a great disdain for its citizens. They see us for what we are. The most blessed people in the world who do nothing but complain about what we don't have , and what we hate about the country instead of thanking the good Lord we live here.

Stop buying the negative venom you are fed everyday by the media. Shut off the TV, burn Newsweek, and use the New York Times for the bottom of your bird cage. Then start being grateful for all we have as a country.

There is exponentially more good than bad.

WE ARE THE MOST BLESSED PEOPLE ON EARTH.

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif Yeah, right. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Police are not in the busines of "defense". You'd better be prepared to defend your family yourself, or suffer the consequences!!.

The police will defend you...if you can get the prowler to hang around and wait for them for 3-45 minutes (depending on where you live). /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

I am unhappy with the way polititions are trying to take our rights(especially firearm rights), most of the products at stores are imported, health care, bs taxes, liberal teachers at schools, etc the list goes on.

In June of '05, the Supreme Court Justices ruled that police do not have a constitutional duty to protect the public. Couple that with the repeated attempts to abolish the 2nd Amendment rights and street scum quickly sees home invasion robbery as a lucrative employment opportunity.

Wow, seems a very enlightening & positive post goes into negative discourse so quickly!! nmleon, your mother appears to more intellectual than the rest of us. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Leon don't worry, I knew you weren't disagreeing. I was just throwing a log of support on your fire. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif A play on the concept of "Defend and Protect".

Apparently, "negative discourse" can be found just about anywhere you want to find it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

When our local police cars have "To serve and protect" painted on the side, it sounds like false advertising to me.

Well, I am one of the unhappy!
I am very unhappy with the direction of our country.
I am unhappy with the flood of criminials crossing our borders every day.
I am unhappy with the way we bow down to the islamics.
I am unhappy with politicians getting rich at my expense while in office.
I am unhappy with race pimps like jackson and sharpton slurring other races with impunity because they are "black".
I am unhappy to have criminals, like so many of the Katrina "victims", getting treated with kid gloves.
I'm unhappy with the lack of respect shown the veterans of our country.
I'm unhappy when people in our country know who Britney Spears and Anna Nicloe Smith are but don't have a clue about people like Alvin York, Audie Murphy, Gary Gordon, Randy Shugart.
Unhappy with the direction of the country - DANG STRAIGHT.

I had to look Gary Gordon and Randy Shugart up but I am with ya on the rest...sad thing is I have Blackhawk Down on DVD and have watched it several dozen times. Think I might watch it when I get home tonight just so I can see who exactly they were!

NASA,
In today's litigation mad, lawyer driven society, the ruling by the Supreme Court has been made to protect us all from one individual. Think it through... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

the unhappiness is borne from people that believe we have reached a pinnacle in this country, and the only way now is down.
Perhaps they think of 'days gone by' where life more closely resembled an episode of the Brady Bunch.

I agree to some point that we are on a downward slide in many areas, but of course the worst day for the worst off in America beats the hell out of being part of the elite in many other countries.

Part of this problem is...there is money in complaining. Think the Jesse Jacksons of the world really want equality? Hell no, then they would have to get real jobs instead of becoming wealthy complaining constantly. Think women want real equality in the military? Tell them to shave their heads and lift that tank track and see how many really want to be there.

What happens is people have some minor complaint. Not "We're being enslaved and murdered" but rather- "my school didn't give me a day off for some goofy religious holiday".
Yet they act like it's the most horrendous offense possible. Because they don't know TRUE adversity or what it is to be truly downtrodden.

I do complain too though. We have a president that single handedly is setting the US back in scientific advancement at least 15 years by believing his particular mythology should be forced upon the whole of the country. His only opposition is every bit as bad as his ilk.

Therein lies alot of complaint. That no matter how good things are- no current or future leadership in sight is going to do anything but further screw up this country.

We have problems, and not even anything that can't be overcome. It's just that it is only going to get worse no matter who buys the leadership of the country.

"This would be the best of all possible worlds, if there were no religion in it."

Let's put that quote in context:

From that very same page:
"Without Religion this World would be Something not fit to be mentioned in polite Company, I mean Hell." [John Adams to Thomas Jefferson, April 19, 1817]

If you'd like to throw out quotes from the founding fathers, you will come off rather badly. I chose a MILD quote compared to those of say, Thomas Jefferson.

Jefferson pulled no punches in his dismissal of religion, especially the puritanical form of christianity prevelant at the time. If you'd like, I'd be more than happy to destroy any theory that this is in any form a christian nation.

Also note that the term religion is used, not a particular one. At most, several founding fathers were mild deists. Few had any use for the church of rome. Several dissertations by founding fathers go to some length to describe a personal god. PERSONAL.

Not the one with tax breaks and forcing their goofy creation mythology in schools.

So sure- let's throw quotes if you'd like. You'll lose. I have history on my side, not religious apologist dogmatic responses.

And you did a good job of taking it out of context, IMHO. There's the photo of Adam's letter to Jefferson for anyone to read and draw their own conclusions about Adam's intent.

There are enough books written on the "religious" leanings of the founding fathers that I don't feel the need to write another one here online. I've read the material, I assume you've read the material; I stand where I stand, you stand where you stand. Their "religious" leanings were not not my point, anyway. My point was whether or not you quoted Adams accurately.
