Mag-na-Porting my Colt Anaconda

Depending on your use I would load up(or buy) some lighter 44mag/44spcl loads for most shooting. You come out ahead on all fronts money wise. Yes if your hunting you may want to use the full power stuff, maybe not even then.

if money is an issue and you are not really in love with the anaconda, then why not sell the colt and buy a tuarus Raging bull. they are already ported and mine seems to be a good reliable gun. you would have money left over to spend on wammo

Your colt is worth 3 Tuaruses.
For me that would be a disappointing trade. I believe the S&W is closer to the quality of the Colt

Worth 3 Tuaruses ? You mean there no good? I think its gonna be light loads from here on out. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Well, I must be the only one here with an Anaconda that actually has been Mag-na-ported.
I had it done to mine about 8 or 10 years ago.

Yes, it reduces recoil but it's still a good hand full.
You don't want to stand next to me when I fire it, but it's not bad for the shooter.
Anacondas have gone up in price, but mines not a safe-queen, I bought it used and I shoot it. I think most people would see the porting as an improvement.
Would I do it again? Probably, but there are problems.
#1 The hot gases being ported near the front sight have a tendancy to discolor the Orange plastic insert in the front sight, and
#2 the pressure venting also brings with it powder residue and a build up of lead around the ports. Hard but not impossible to clean off the smooth finish of the stainless barrel and around that lovely raised rib.

I'd ask them to either port it a bit further back on the barrel away from the front sight, and/or have them angle the vents more away from the rib and top of barrel.

I also purchased a set of fancy Hogue wooden grips for it. They really look good, but darn it if they don't make you really feel the recoil. Besides being not a common gun, it took Hogue a really long time to get around to making them. I took them off and put back on the factory rubber grips.

Mine has a wonderfully light trigger, and I'm glad it's so well built because I've shot some reloads though it that I wouldn't shoot again. But I wouldn't sell it for any of the prices so far quoted above.

Try some 200 grain slugs with some HS-6 or HS-7 behind them for a good shooting combination.

I Mag-na-Ported two of my S&W M640 357's with 2.5" barrels. What a difference it made in controlling follow on shots. I am really glad I did it.

It was fine on my 640's but I would not do it to a collectible.

I have had 6 .44 Mags and still have 3 of them. 2 of the 3 are ported and I wish that they all were. For sure it makes an easier gun for me to shoot. I do not worry one bit about the muzzle blast because I don't shoot them without my muffs on.

If you going to keep that Colt and don't care about hurting the value I would say go ahead and port it. After all, it is your gun and you will be the one shooting it.
