Magnum pistol primers

Local shop finally had something other than 209 shot shell primers they had federal large magnum pistol. I snatched up 10 boxes between 2 trips with their 4 box limit(had fiancé go with me one of the trips to clear em out of the last 6). Currently I load for my 45acp pistols since that ammo is continuously hard to find and I go to the range every week so always loading up practice ammo. Right now I just do 4.5gr of titegroup over Winchester LPP pushing berrys 230gr fmj. I’ve only got 150 of those primers left though. When I switch to the magnums would it be safe with the same load or dial the powder charge down some.

Good find! I wish i had those for my 45 Colt

Do you have a chronograph?

If not, consider purchasing one. It will tell you a lot when you run your current loadings over it vs the new one. '

I also completely agree with HH.

Though... w/o a chrono... You won't really get much info. Pistol brass likely starts to get marks around 60,00psi. 45 ACP max is much, much less than that.

I have seen people at the shooting club go by feel. They can close their eyes after the shot and predict a very accurate velocity.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

I may get flamed for saying this (wouldn't be the first time

but I tried Rem #9's in brass for my Ruger BH in 45 Colt and everything
was fine with a reduced load. Some told me the Rem #9's were longer
than pistol primers, but none extended beyond the primer pocket.

They will work but it is highly advisable to drop back to starting load and work up.

Strictly for informational purposes, I worked up a load for 9mm with Federal Small Pistol Magnums using Vhitavouri N320 and 124 gr Jacketed FMJRN. Vhitavouri's max load was 4.0 grs. I safely worked up to 4.6 grs with ZERO pressure signs in a Glock 19 and got about 1150 FPS to mimic my carry ammo. I would suggest a Chronograph when working up loads and pay attention to seating depth! I experimented with seating depth on that load trying to cheat the powder charge to get target velocity and merely seating the bullet 0.07" deeper I gained about 30-40 fps.
