Maine coyote weights...

I know most guys call them heavier than they are, I weight every one I kill most adults weight 30-36 I had 2 over 40 1 43 and the other 47. The big hunt here in PA. the last 2 years have had 50 plus that won.

SWPA here as well, we have killed some males at 45lbs and females at 40. Last year the biggest was a 43lb male. I trapped one several years ago that was probably the biggest one I have ever got. Wish I would have weighed it… I know mark Zagger traps a pile of yotes in NY and he told me once bsing at a convention he has trapped multiple 50+ pounders. I believe him, he is hell on coyotes, and arguably the best eastern coyote trapper alive…. Kip Feroce has done it all when it comes to k9 trapping and killing, including black, red, blonde, and pure WHITE coyotes and I know he has got a couple 50+ lbs.

Here’s a couple over 45 from when I trapped

I always figured coyotes up North were all bigger because it gets colder there. I've only weighed two that I've shot. I forget what that one was 44 pounds or something. The biggest one was 47.6 pounds. I shot him on a dead run as he was going across a winter wheat field. Slipped a bullet up under his rib cage. He spun a few times and fell over dead.

The biggest Texas coyote I ever shot was 32 pounds and my buddies thought it was huge for where they live.

I thought everyone would find this interesting.

I have accurate records for 170 coyotes taken in downeast and northern Maine over the last 10 years. These coyotes were trapped, shot and snared from 3rd week of October through March. This data will show how truly rare a 50 # coyote is and even a 40 pounder. This data is probably skewed to the heavier side. We try to weigh them all but we always make sure to weigh the larger coyotes.

90 females
Average weight of 28.111 pounds
Smallest was 16#s and the largest was 43#s (only 2 female coyotes went over 40#s, both killed in late march)

80 male coyotes
Average weight of 32.325 pounds
Smallest was 10.5#s and the largest was 46#s (only 10 out of 80 were over 40#s)

I know of many credible people that have killed 50#s in Maine but I have yet to see or weigh one on a scale I trust. I will have to see a 50# coyote to believe it just like I will have to see mountain lion and wolf tracks to believe it. Everyone that sees a coyote says it was a 50 pounder.....BS. Anyway, just some interesting info.

I live and trap in Maine. I have trapped and snared over 400 coyotes in the last 40 years. My largest coyote was 56lbs. Second largest was 46lbs. 2 years ago my daughter trapped one that weighed 50lbs. Most males here are not over 40lbs.

Here is some interesting "facts".... hmmmm.....

That "wildlife news" bit is flat out wrong. That animal was identified by DNA to be a wolf and linked to the wolves in the Upper Midwest. There have been three wolves killed and verified by the conservation department in modern history in Missouri, and all have been linked to wolves in the Upper Midwest.

Whats the length of a large yote hide when tanned? I called a large female in for my son last winter. Biggest coyote ive ever seen. I'm guessing at least 35lbs. Maybe little more I think....38 best guess. Anyway, had it tanned for him because had exceptional coat/large. Measured the hide and it is just under 55 inches hanging on wall. Prob dumb question but I've only weighed two coyotes. A double I got several years ago. I thought they were big and were only 33 lbs apiece. This one was considerably bigger. Wish had reliable scale.

I only weigh a coyote when I go to pick it up and I feel some resistance. Only killed/caught 2 that hit the 40 and over weight. Still nothing that hit the 45lb weight in a coyote or a 30lb cat…yet.
