But, but, we neeeeed amnesty. The only reform we need is to close the dam borders and round them up and send them back.

Majority of U.S. citizens say illegal immigrants should be deported
By Rachelle Younglai

WASHINGTON | Wed Feb 20, 2013 8:09pm EST

(Reuters) - More than half of U.S. citizens believe that most or all of the country's 11 million illegal immigrants should be deported, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll released on Wednesday that highlights the difficulties facing lawmakers trying to reform the U.S. immigration system.

The online survey shows resistance to easing immigration laws despite the biggest push for reform in Congress since 2007.

Thirty percent of those polled think that most illegal immigrants, with some exceptions, should be deported, while 23 percent believe all illegal immigrants should be deported.

Only 5 percent believe all illegal immigrants should be allowed to stay in the United States legally, and 31 percent want most illegal immigrants to stay.

These results are in line with other polls in recent years, suggesting that people's views on immigration have not changed dramatically since the immigration debate reignited in Congress last month, according to Ipsos pollster Julia Clark.

"It's not Americans' views that are shifting. It is that the political climate is ripe for this discussion," after the November election when Hispanics voted overwhelmingly in favor of Democratic President Barack Obama, she said.

"Democrats feel that the time is right to capitalize on their wins and Republicans feel that they had a bad blow and are eager to reach out to Hispanics," she added.

Polls show that most Americans back immigration reform, although they often have different ideas of what that means, with some people favoring looser immigration laws while others want to see greater border security.

A group of eight U.S. senators are working on a bipartisan deal to enact immigration reform, the first major attempt since a similar overhaul died in Congress six years ago.

The senators' proposal calls for a full path to citizenship for illegal immigrants once they pay back taxes and a fine and wait in line behind others applying to become Americans.

A plan by Obama has similar provisions, but the senators want any move to relax immigration laws dependant on boosting security on the southern border.

ISSUE POLARIZES POLICYMAKERS

Attitudes toward immigration are polarized by party, according to another the Reuters/Ipsos poll. Seventy-five percent of Republicans think all or most immigrants should be deported, compared to 40 percent of Democrats who think the same.

Republican Senator John McCain, one of the eight senators in the group, had his own encounter with citizens angered by illegal immigration on Tuesday when residents of his state of Arizona complained bitterly at a town hall meeting about the lack of security on the border with Mexico.

One man asked why troops had not been deployed to the border.

"Why didn't the army go down there and stop them? Because the only thing that stops them I'm afraid to say, and it's too [beeep] bad, is a gun," the man said,

Another resident, Keith Smith, got into a testy exchange with McCain, the 2008 Republican presidential candidate whose views on immigration have fluctuated over the years.

"Cut off their welfare and all their stuff and they'll go back," Smith said, referring to undocumented workers.

McCain had been trying to explain his position: "You're not telling these people the truth. They mow our lawns, they care for our babies, they clean . . . that's what those people do," he said.

The Arizona lawmaker, whose position on immigration hardened during the 2010 midterm elections before softening again, is a key part of the Republican side of the senators' bipartisan immigration effort.

Wednesday's Reuters/Ipsos poll was conducted Friday through Tuesday and surveyed 1,443 Americans over the age of 18.

The precision of the Reuters/Ipsos online poll is measured using a credibility interval. In this survey, the poll has a credibility interval of plus or minus 2.9 percentage points.

Like it makes any difference??? Most Americans didn't want the auto maker bailout, MOST Americans didn't want the bank bailout, MOST Americans didn't and still don't want Obamacare. Why should we expect them to listen now???

They better keep a few of them or that majority that wants to get rid of them will have to take care of their own yards this summer. Or roof their own houses, detail their own cars and do a lot of other things that they are now paying that illegal to do for them.

That's why I felt like washing my hands after casting my vote for him

Well, I don't mind hispanics who have legally entered the US at all. Good hard working people. I don't like law breakers at all though, and if a person violates the law to enter this country they should immediately be deported.

As for keeping them around to do menial labor around our homes I'll say this.

The cars I own that I won't run through a car wash are washed by me. I mow my own lawn with my John Deer ZTR mower, and don't even allow my own daughters to run it, let alone an illegal of some kind. When my roof needed replaced I hired a local contractor, who employs local college age guys to work with him in the summer.

If they come here illegally send em home NOW!!!

Then maybe a legal resident or welfare recipient can get those jobs.

I think this is a red herring. InCanada we don't have anywhere near the illegal immigrant problem the U.S. has. Maybe it's too dang cold. But we do have people doing those services mentioned. always have and they aren't illegals.

So what are Canada's laws on Welfare, Long Term Unemployment, Food Stamps and other such "you don't need to work, to be entitled to everything those that do work have", programs Redfrog??

The problem here is, that it is more profitable for anyone that is even a little less than ambitious to sign up for welfare, than it is for them to find a job. And, since many of color have been led to believe that society owes them a debt for something that happened 200 years ago, they aren't too proud to be lazy.

Then we have 99 week unemployment benefits approved by our illustrious leaders in Washington. And, I'm sorry, I know jobs can be difficult to find at times, been down that road, but they are out there if you truly want to work, and there is no excuse for going 2 years without a job of some sort. Might not be in your field, might not pay enough to make payments on your beamer, but there are jobs out there, and if you were smart enough to make that kind of salary to begin with, you should be smart enough to trade the Beamer off on a Hyundai.

However, the biggest problem with 99.99% of the people that find themselves unemployed and stuck, is that they are in hock up to their ears. Most owe more on 50% of what they own, than it's worth, and they find it impossible to get out from under the debt, when forced into survival mode.

A welfare recipient get a job. Surely you say that in jest.

I hear the free titty milk tastes pretty good.

Every time a republican grants amnesty etc, all he/she is doing is giving votes to the next democrat runner. It's been done more than once and each time the result is the same.

Assuming there are 11 million illegals, all of whom are of course fine upstanding people who only come here to work... they need to be deported and let them go through the process.

At the same time 11 million welfare recipients need to have 100% of their welfare removed and be given an assigned job that was vacated by deportation.

The argument will of course be that cost will then rise because of blah blah minimum blah. Easy enough. The rancher etc that was using the illegals for cheap labors pays each worker the same wage he was paying before. Costs stay the same. The govt then pays each worker the difference between the welfare rate and what they are being paid. The workers monthly income stays the same. The cost to the govt. is reduced. The taxpayers that are already paying to keep them alive finally see a return for their investment. The worker is finally earning their way along with their health insurance etc.

The alternative, their welfare is removed anyway and you can either find a job, take the job, or find a way to live for free.

It's a win/win/win imo except for the person who's complaining that their xbox time is being infringed on.

Trust me rocky when I say our suystem is not perfect by anyone's measure.

I don't believe we have food stamps. Unemployment I believe is up to 26 weeks. Some area of the country , people work at seasonal jobs for 6 mos and collect U/I for 6 months[ fishermen. logging.]

If you are on U/I you must fill in a report every two weks of your activity to find work.

Welfare is certainly available and it is abused like every where else.
But while we do have illegal immigrants, it is not nearly the problem the U.S. has. We also have a Consrvative governmet in now who hass closd the holes in the refugee applications and shortened the process for hearing these cases from a few years to 30 days.

We do have immigrants doing menial, manual labour, but they are here legally trying to have a better life. If they go through proper channels I have no problem with it.

The guys paying taxes for welfare services among other things are often subjected to drug testing, especially in Alberta with the nergy industry. It seems reasonable to me that welfare recipients do the same, as well as report on efforts to find work.

Correct to a point... I've watched them little Mexicans in the field, and they are getting paid by what they pick, and them little devils WORK! You'll see guys pick a hamper of cucumbers, throw it up on their shoulder and RUN to the truck with it, get it dumped, and RUN back to where they left off. And, they will do that all day.

You won't find that in welfare recipients, so the farmer/rancher won't receive the same production for the same money. And, lack of production in the fresh produce industry can mean lost crop as well. So the farmer and the consumer will take it in the shorts.
