Making .300 Whisper from .223 brass

Yo guys

I have a friend that wants to make him a .300 Whisper. I knows that the parent case is the .221 Furball necked to 30 caliber. BUT- he has thousands of .223 brass and wants to use instead. I know that it would work, but how much trouble would it be and how expensive. .223 is LOTS cheaper than Furball stuff. And besides, he has lots of it. I mean would this get a bit complicated pretty quick here? Sounds like it might.

I have not made whisper ammo from 223s but I have made 221 Fireball. Two things you should do are anneal the cases and turn the necks because the brass tends to be thicker farther down the case. As Jack said you will have to cut a lot of case off, I used a tubing cutter and took off about three-eighths of an inch.

I made all my 300 whisper brass out of 556 and 223 range pick up brass. I went and bought a mini pipe cutter in the plumbing section at the local Home Depot.

I take the sizer button out of my full lenght sizer die, instead of caming over with the shell holder touching the bottom of the die like normaly full lenght sizing I leave about the thickness of a nickel between the shell holder and the bottom of the die. The mini pipe cutter I have is just about right in that I use the leading edge of the shoulder as a guide. Once the cutter is in place and tightened down I chuck the brass in my hand drill and spin the extra length of the case off. Next I take the cut brass and run it through the full length sizer with the button in it, the dies is screwed down normally, so it cams over when the shell holder is run to the top. After that is done I trim to length and load. I can make about 150 a night while watching tv.

I am running mine through an AR15 and dont have to turn or ream the necks, if you have a tight chamber.

I really don't think making 300 Whisper out of 223s would be any more complicated than making it from Fireball brass. Outside of cutting the brass you would not be working it as much. Making it from Fireball brass you would probably fire form it and run the risk of split necks. It looks about as broad as it is wide to me.

Blackhawk43, That's a good point on the necks possibly splitting from being resized to .30 cal. I've only gone up from 6mm to 6.5mm when making Dasher ammo so have not gone that far. Good luck, Dave
