Making an AR a single shot for kids learning to hunt??? How to do it safely

Exactly.

You guys that are advising people to make a single shot AR by modifying the method in which it was designed to operate need to just stop. You're going to cost someone a boat load of money trying to fix their stuff. Just stop.

DO NOT, try and completely close your gas system.
DO NOT, try and fire without the gas tube.

The whole purpose of the AR15's gas system is to automatically unlock the lugs, release pressure in the chamber and eject the case after the case expansion has sprung back to a point where it can be extracted.

When you jack around with "turning off the gas", all you're doing is holding all the pressure in the case, which causes it to seal itself inside. Without the gas pushing the carrier backward, you won't get bolt rotation and you have to forcefully try and get the lugs to rotate manually. The problem is that this isn't a bolt action, where you have a nice little handle to lift up on. You're going to have to beat on the charge handle or beat/pry on the carrier itself.

All you're going to accomplish is damage.

Doesn't get much cheaper than that.

If you want to run your AR's in single shot mode...then a blocked single shot mag is the way to do it correctly. PERIOD.

Cbass thanks for the info. I wonder how guys in countries that don't allow semi auto ARs do it? I've seen videos on youtube.

I will definitely go the single shot mag route.

There are a few places that make TRUE bolt action uppers that will pin directly to a standard lower. Fine and dandy if you want to go that route, but the mag is easily the best option for $$ and safety.

Cbass is spot on, do not do anything that alters the gas function of your rifle. Get a mag block for $10 and never look back!
